Spooky Gulch lived up to its name! What started as a fun and adventurous day hike, ended with some tears, a few four letter words, thoughts of divorce, possible homicide and finally a sense of relief and pride. This hike isn’t for the weak and up until yesterday, I included myself in that category. Through every challenge, I am learning that I’m so much more capable than I think I am and sometimes...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the thrilling, obstacle-filled hike through Spooky Gulch and Peek-a-boo Gulch, calling it a must-do in Utah. The narrow squeezes and rock slide add an unforgettable adventure. However, the hike in/out can be hot and disorienting if you get lost, and it's not recommended for those with joint issues or claustrophobia. Packing light is essential.

"So fun. Not as visually pleasing as other slots but so many obstacles to climb over, it was so, so fun. The hike in/out is hot, not very straight forward and can be long… especially if you get lost…. Which we did.

Do make sure to go the correct route: spooky 1st then, peak a boo 2nd. This makes for a less sun-exposed hike on the way back and avoids annoying the other hikers. We didn’t do this but went early enough in the day (8 am) to avoid bottle-necking everyone else. I’d imagine even an hour later and we would have been a horrible burden.

If you have joint issues, especially knee issues, maybe reconsider. I was frequently dragging my outward turned foot through areas. If you’re claustrophobic, don’t torture yourself. Also, incase case you didn’t get the notice: don’t bring a big bag!! Tiny, light weight daypacks only! This will allow you a better time and protect the space more.

Do hike with lots of water though. It’s a hot hike in."

Ash Majer

"This is a must if you're visiting the area. Just make sure to bring healthy snacks and at least 1 large bottle of water per person. The entire hike to visit both gulches may take 3h-4h - or about 2h if you are in a great physical condition."

Alejandro Cuba Ruiz

"it is a wonderful experience to go through the slot. it is so narrow at some points i have to lower my body.
also thanks two Utah families, without their help, we could not finish this slot."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Spooky Gulch can be an exciting adventure for families, but it requires careful consideration. The extreme narrowness of Spooky Gulch might be too challenging or frightening for very young children or those who are claustrophobic. Peek-a-boo Gulch, with its rope descent, can be more manageable and fun for older kids. Instagram

Key advice for families: Pack light, bring ample water and snacks, and assess your children's comfort with confined spaces and physical challenges. Hiking Spooky first, then Peek-a-boo, might be a good strategy to ease into the experience. Always prioritize safety and be prepared to turn back if needed. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

Spooky Gulch is a fantastic, low-cost adventure. The primary expenses will be transportation to the area (fuel, potential vehicle rental) and any necessary supplies like water and snacks. Since permits are generally not required, the hike itself is free. Reddit

Tips for budget travelers: Carpool if possible, pack all your own food and water to avoid expensive convenience store stops, and ensure your vehicle is suitable for dirt roads to avoid costly repairs. The experience itself is priceless! Instagram

For couples looking for a unique and thrilling adventure, Spooky Gulch and Peek-a-boo Gulch are a perfect pairing. The challenge of navigating the narrow passages and overcoming obstacles together can be a bonding experience. Instagram+1

Recommendations: Go at sunrise for a more intimate experience, pack a small picnic to enjoy at a scenic spot on the way in or out, and be sure to capture some memorable photos (though challenging in the tight spaces!). The shared accomplishment of completing this unique hike will be a lasting memory. Instagram

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Slot Canyons

Spooky Gulch, like other slot canyons in Utah, is a testament to the power of water over millennia. These narrow corridors are carved by flash floods that relentlessly erode the soft Navajo sandstone. Over millions of years, what might have started as a small crack in the desert floor is transformed into a winding, sculpted passage. The unique shapes and textures within the canyon walls are a direct result of this ongoing geological process. Instagram

These canyons are not static; they are constantly being shaped by the forces of nature. Understanding this dynamic environment is key to appreciating the beauty and respecting the power of these natural wonders. The smooth, undulating walls are a visual record of countless water flows, each leaving its mark. Instagram

When visiting, remember that you are walking through a landscape that is actively being formed. This perspective can enhance your experience and foster a deeper connection with the natural world. The sheer artistry of erosion is on full display, making every turn a new discovery. Instagram

Safety First: Navigating the Narrow

The defining characteristic of Spooky Gulch is its extreme narrowness, with sections so tight that visitors must contort their bodies to pass. This presents a significant challenge, especially for those who are claustrophobic or have physical limitations. Always check your width before committing to a squeeze, and if in doubt, find an alternative route or turn back. Instagram+2

Beyond the physical squeeze, the most critical safety concern is flash flooding. Slot canyons act like natural funnels, and even distant rain can send a dangerous torrent of water through them. It is imperative to check the weather forecast meticulously before entering and to avoid the canyons entirely if there is any chance of rain. Instagram

Furthermore, the lack of cell service within the canyon means that self-reliance is paramount. Inform someone of your hiking plans, including your expected return time. If you encounter difficulties, such as getting stuck or needing assistance, be prepared for potential delays and significant rescue costs. Instagram

Combining Spooky and Peek-a-boo Gulches

Many visitors choose to hike both Spooky Gulch and Peek-a-boo Gulch, as they are relatively close to each other and offer a complementary slot canyon experience. Peek-a-boo is known for its more playful obstacles, including a rope to assist with descents, while Spooky Gulch offers the ultimate narrow squeeze. InstagramReddit

The recommended route is to start with Peek-a-boo and then proceed to Spooky. This strategy offers several advantages. Firstly, it means you'll be hiking out of Spooky Gulch during the later part of the day, when the sun is lower, providing more shade and a less exposed return journey. Secondly, it helps to manage the flow of hikers, reducing congestion and potential bottlenecks within the narrow passages. Reddit

When navigating between the two, follow cairns (piles of rocks) or established trails. There's a notable fork in the path marked by a lone tree/shrub. Veering right at this point typically leads you back towards the Spooky Gulch exit or Peek-a-boo entrance, while staying straight or to the left continues towards the Spooky Gulch entrance. Reddit
