A little over 12ish miles through another world 🥾🌋 We hiked Keonehe'ehe'e (Sliding Sands) Trail down into the Haleakalā Crater and out the Halemau‘u switchbacks (with a couple of detours because some places were so pretty we had to see them). This isn’t a crater in the classic sense, it’s a massive erosional valley carved by time and the elements. Walking across it felt like crossing the surface ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique, Mars-like scenery of the Haleakalā Crater on the Sliding Sands Trail. The otherworldly volcanic landscapes and the chance to see rare silversword plants are major highlights. However, the strenuous uphill climb back and the need for thorough preparation regarding water, sun protection, and appropriate footwear are frequently mentioned challenges.

"The views from this hike are really unique, with red mountain soil meeting green plants and lots of interesting succulents along the way! 🌵 The terrain is mostly reasonable, but the sands and gravel are slippery, so it is advisable to wear proper hiking boots. 🥾 Also, be careful going down as it takes about 1 1/2 times as long going back up! I drank about 1.5 litres of water. 🍶 There is a water refill station outside the bathrooms but nothing during the hike."

"Amazing hike! The initial descent is very easy with otherworldly surroundings. Loved how the vegetation gradually got thicker and we ended somewhere so different. The final ascent did have me a bit out of breath! But definitely doable. We did the 11 miles in about 4.5 hours with minimal breaks, easily hitching back a ride to the summit with the sunset crowd. Definitely recommend!"

"The Sliding Sands Trail (Keonehe‘ehe‘e Trail) is a well-known hiking route here, renowned for its spectacular crater views and otherworldly landscapes. Beginning near Haleakalā’s summit (at 10,023 feet), the trail descends into the crater, reaching depths of 2,800 feet. An overnight permit is required to go all the way to the bottom. Along the way, the volcanic terrain feels like stepping onto an alien planet, with lava flows, silversword plants resembling cacti, and breathtaking seas of clouds. It’s awe-inspiring! To our surprise, our little one walked the entire trail with us, chatting and laughing along the way! 👍 Looks like we, the adults, are the ones who need to work on our fitness! 😅"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Haleakalā Crater

The Sliding Sands Trail (Keonehe'ehe'e) is your gateway into the immense Haleakalā Crater, a massive erosional valley carved over millennia. This 11-mile trail descends from the summit, offering a unique geological experience. The terrain is a stark contrast to the lushness of coastal Maui, featuring volcanic ash, cinder cones, and lava flows that create an almost alien landscape. Instagram+1

As you descend, you'll notice the gradual change in vegetation. Initially, the landscape is barren, but as you go deeper, you'll encounter hardy high-altitude plants, including the iconic silversword, a plant endemic to Maui's highest peaks. The sheer scale of the crater and the silence, broken only by the wind, can be profoundly awe-inspiring. InstagramReddit

It's crucial to understand that hiking down is significantly easier than hiking back up. The return journey involves a steep climb, often taking about 1.5 times longer than the descent. Proper preparation, including adequate water and sturdy footwear, is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. Reddit

What to Pack for the Sliding Sands Trail

The Sliding Sands Trail presents a unique set of environmental challenges, primarily due to its high altitude and exposed location. Layering clothing is paramount. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating layer like fleece, and top it off with a windproof and waterproof outer shell. Temperatures can swing dramatically from cool and breezy to surprisingly warm under the sun, and sudden rain showers are common. InstagramReddit

Footwear is non-negotiable. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and traction are essential for navigating the loose, slippery volcanic sand and gravel. Regular sneakers will not provide adequate grip and can lead to injuries. Hiking poles are also highly recommended, as they offer stability on the descent and provide leverage for the strenuous ascent. Reddit

Beyond clothing and footwear, hydration and sun protection are critical. Carry at least two liters of water per person, as there are no water sources on the trail. A wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap is ideal for windy conditions, and high-SPF sunscreen should be applied liberally. Don't forget sunglasses to protect your eyes from the intense high-altitude sun. Reddit

Photography Tips for a Martian Landscape

The Sliding Sands Trail offers a photographer's dream with its otherworldly volcanic landscapes. The stark contrast between the red and black sands, the dramatic crater walls, and the vast skies creates unique visual opportunities. Early mornings and late afternoons provide the most flattering light, with softer shadows and warmer hues that enhance the Martian feel of the terrain. Instagram

When shooting, consider using a wide-angle lens to capture the immense scale of the crater and the sweeping vistas. Look for interesting textures in the volcanic rock and sand, and frame your shots to include the unique silversword plants for added visual interest. The changing weather can also add drama to your photos, so be prepared to capture moody skies or misty conditions. Instagram+1

Be mindful of the challenging conditions. Protect your camera gear from dust and potential moisture. A sturdy tripod can be beneficial for capturing sharp images in low light or for long exposures. Remember that cell service is unreliable, so download any necessary maps or guides beforehand. Reddit
