What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Hosmer Grove's unique forest and abundant birdlife, calling it an often-overlooked gem. While the short loop is praised for its beauty and accessibility, some campers have noted issues with noise from fellow visitors during quiet hours.
"Super family friendly trail. Lots of rare birds that come very close to you. One of my favorite hikes on Maui. This is a must stop when visiting and it doesn’t seem to get enough attention. It is short but has a huge bang for the memory bank. I’m not a huge bird person but here I found myself diving down the spiral of knowledge looking up all these really cool birds."

"Campsite was great. Fellow camper had their car alarm sound off at 1 am. WTH? Then there was a couple, a man and a woman that chatted away all night.
If you go camp you need to respect the quiet hours 10 pm - 6 am by not speaking or making any controllable noises. If you want private conversation please text (silence your keys) in your tent. ⛺️"

Exploring Hosmer Grove: A Unique Ecosystem
Many of the trees are labeled, offering an educational experience for visitors interested in botany. This unique setting provides a different kind of beauty compared to the volcanic craters or coastal areas of Maui. It's a peaceful spot for a leisurely walk, offering a moment of quiet reflection amidst the grandeur of Haleakalā.
The grove's unique ecosystem also attracts a variety of birdlife. While some species are introduced, the area has become a haven for native Hawaiian birds, making it a prime location for birdwatching. The dense foliage and varied plant life provide ample food and shelter, allowing visitors to observe these beautiful creatures up close.
The Magic of Haleakalā Sunrises and Sunsets
It's crucial to remember that sunrise viewing requires advance reservations, which are released on a rolling basis and sell out quickly. Arriving well before dawn is essential to find a good viewing spot and acclimate to the cold temperatures. The summit can be near freezing, so warm clothing is non-negotiable.
While sunrise is popular, sunset offers a similarly spectacular, and often less crowded, experience. The changing light and colors over the crater are equally mesmerizing. Regardless of the time of day, the sheer scale and beauty of Haleakalā's summit views are a profound reminder of nature's power and artistry.
Birdwatching at Hosmer Grove
The birds here are known to be quite habituated to human presence, meaning you can often get remarkably close views without disturbing them. This makes Hosmer Grove an excellent spot for photography and for those who might not have extensive birding experience. Bringing binoculars can significantly enhance your viewing pleasure and help you spot more elusive species.
Beyond the native birds, you might also encounter introduced species that have adapted to the grove's environment. The combination of different plant types provides a diverse food source, supporting a healthy bird population. A slow, quiet walk through the grove is the best way to maximize your chances of spotting these feathered residents.
