Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Skalkaho Pass for its stunning natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and the rewarding experience of driving a historic, unpaved road. The waterfalls and panoramic views are consistently highlighted as major attractions. However, some caution that the road's challenging one-lane gravel nature, lack of guardrails, and seasonal closures require careful preparation and a suitable vehicle.

"The road is very interesting but manageable. Once you get there take some time to marvel at the views and tranquillity. So peaceful and serene. One can take a ride further east on 38 to Philipsburg but there may or may not be much open. However, the downtown is historic."

"I've driven the Skalkaho "Highway," aka Montana Rte 38 for nearly 60 years. If you're shy of heights, or unused to mountain driving, it's best to avoid it. It's one-lane gravel with turnouts and no guardrails. Trailers and motorhomes are strongly discouraged. I'm not afraid of the road, but now there is much more traffic, especially on weekends. You'll inevitably meet at least one idiot, usually on one of the dozens of blind corners, who's trying to set a new speed record crossing the Sapphire divide. Also, be aware that the road is closed from the first big snowfall in Oct-Nov until Memorial Day. As the summer season progresses, it becomes more washboarded with traffic. It's a pretty road, but don't expect a "highway" in the usual 21st century sense."
