Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Whychus Canyon Preserve for its unique desert beauty, historical significance, and peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere, especially during mid-week visits. While the terrain can be rocky and August heat intense, the spectacular views and accessible trails make it a worthwhile escape for those seeking solitude.

"You wanted a desert? You got a desert! In August at least. Whychus Canyon has glorious flashes of life and unexpected, massive clearings but mostly it's hot n dusty! It's pretty easy to get to- even though any GPS I tried didn't have it but the directions on the main website were very accurate and easy to follow. Parking was plentiful and there were even a few shade trees. My car was the only one there. There's a kind of main loop that's pretty flat, or you venture off near the river and there's more of an incline. There's lots of signage at the park about historically significant portions (it used to be a big wagon shipping route!) and the difficulty of different paths you can take. If the Smith Rock crowds leave you rattled, give Whychus Canyon a shot! Your friends definitely haven't been there and will believe anything you tell them."

"Simple hike into a small canyon. Not too steep, a full loop had roughly 650 feet of elevation gain along the entire 4.5 mile route."

Matt Stewart

"Beautiful area. There were a couple of cars there but did not see anyone else until we were heading back. Lots of rocks though so sure to keep your eyes on the trail so you don't trip...may have personal experience"
