What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Sands Point Preserve for its beautiful Gilded Age mansions, scenic trails, and beach access, offering a great escape at a reasonable car admission fee. However, some find the house tours lack accessibility and can be hot, and the parking lot's cobblestone surface is noted as uncomfortable. Information on trails and activities could be more detailed for some.
"Its not awful, but its not great. It needs alot of improvement. Much better information on the property and where things are with things to do. Much better Information on trails go and what you will see, length, with activity level. This is not really for kids they will be bored very quick. The house tours are not handicap friendly and you should not have any limitations with walking and climbing stairs. Also area in front of the houses are uneven, sunken and high cobble stones. Also note theres no AC in house tours, very hot. This property is a one time visit. I hope the property improves areas of: what there is to do, better markers where things are, have hand out maps, and much better information."

"Great to visit preserve even in cloudy weather. Modest admission fee per car is well worth it to maintain Gilded Age mansions and preserve trails. I’m not a fan of preserve’s parking lot. It is large, but cobblestone / grass cover leads to bumpy and uncomfortable parking experience. Highlights of the visit were beach / cliff walks and pond area. Mansions look impressive but gardens around them are just ok. Overall, variety of landscapes (beach, meadows, woods) and hiking opportunities made the visit memorable."

"My fiancé and I had a great experience having out engagement photoshoot here. Jackie responded quickly and we were able to coordinate with our photographer on the first date we picked. I have many memories going to Sands Point Preserve growing up. I miss the Medieval festival that used to come through every year. When I was a child they had an animatronic dinosaur exhibit in the main building. My family used to come for these and to walk on the trail to the beach. When I got older I came with my dog. Now my fiancé and I go for picnics. He has memories from when he was younger too. It's a beautiful location."

A Glimpse into Gilded Age Grandeur
Castle Gould, built in 1902, adds another layer of historical intrigue. Originally intended as a grand gesture, its story is intertwined with personal relationships, making it a fascinating site to explore. The grounds surrounding these mansions are equally impressive, featuring manicured lawns, rose gardens, and scenic overlooks that transport visitors back in time.
These historic structures are not just relics of the past; they are living testaments to Long Island's rich history and its connection to prominent American families. The Sands Point Preserve Conservancy works diligently to maintain these estates, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
Nature's Embrace: Trails and Beaches
The preserve has also focused on ecological restoration, such as the recent daylighting of a stream, which helps filter water and rebuild habitats. This commitment to nature adds another dimension to the visitor experience, appealing to those interested in conservation and local ecosystems. The variety of terrain, from gentle paths to more rugged sections, ensures there's a trail for every fitness level.
Access to the Long Island Sound beach provides a refreshing contrast to the wooded areas. Visitors can stroll along the shore, take in the expansive water views, and enjoy the coastal scenery. While not a typical swimming beach, it offers a tranquil spot for relaxation and appreciating the natural beauty of the North Shore.
