Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge for its serene natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere. However, the challenging access road, lack of amenities, and uneven terrain can be drawbacks for some. It's a gem for nature lovers seeking tranquility, but requires preparedness.

"Hard to find since you need to drive on an access road and it feels like you are trespassing between two farms. But it's a fun hike with your choice of river, ocean, and salt ponds to see rabbits and lots of birds."

Eric Carlson

"We found it! The mouth of the Salinas river. Beautiful outdoor wildlife refuge with dunes, tall grasses, marshes and a variety of animals. Deer, rabbits, coyote and over 5 species of shore bird spotted in a 3 mile hike.
No dogs or litter! This is an important protected habitat for endangered species and nesting birds. Shore fishing year round (I only saw catch and release but research for more details) and seasonal duck hunting. Must drive on a bumpy and sometimes wet dirt road for quarter mile to access a smallish parking lot.
Watchout for ticks, posion oak, and strong winds blowing sand in ya face.
Not very accessible to handycap folks because the trail is not flat, paved or graveled and most of the refuge is dunes."

Noel Daniel

"5 for nature & serenity, 3 for isolation & lack of amenities. A little visited spot just off Hwy 1 with beautiful wetlands and isolated endless beach running north to the mouth of the Salinas River. No toilets, water or trash cans. Parking reached via dirt road (1 km) that can be impassable after heavy rain (offering the option of adding a muddy extra km to your hike). Sign says open sunrise to sunset."
