Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the opportunity to see wild horses, elk, and porcupines in a natural setting. The remote beauty and potential for unique wildlife encounters are highlights. However, some find the roads challenging, insect populations high, and wildlife sightings inconsistent, especially during certain times or seasons.

"Went for an evening drive tonight and learned something that I didn’t know, like that elk and wild horses like to hang out together. Seen a cute little rabbit and one nice buck. Besides the mosquitoes it was perfect. Just make sure to take some bug spray with you."

"This is a lovely wildlife refuge. Well maintained (well, the washboard Road was a little crazy) and many birding and animal opportunities. I could hear the sandhill cranes, black-capped chickadee, and Canada geese, but didn’t ever see them, but I did see porcupines! They were amazing! The two wild horses were pretty cool too. The skat was huge so I’m guessing it was an elk(smaller than the horse poop)? A woman that I met said she had seen an eagle. Last year she said there were a dozen eagles.

You’ll need to walk a ways to see the porcupines, look for the big furry butt in the tree."

"Great views of the Green River however, when we went on the first weekend of September there bees mostly everywhere that it was hard to experience nature. I am allergic to bee stings and did not want to get stung at all since this is a very remote wildlife refuge. The closest town to Vernal which is a 40 minute drive away from this national wildlife refuge. Also I did not see much wildlife while we were here in the afternoon."
