What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Samuel Myers Park is praised for its beautiful shoreline restoration and peaceful wetland boardwalk, offering a serene escape. Visitors appreciate the dog-friendly access and the educational butterfly garden. "Lovely shoreline restoration project. A place of quiet humble beauty. There is a nice boardwalk to an inlet of Lake Michigan. There is an interpretative boardwalk trail. Magical place. Not spectacular but beautiful"

"A warning- don’t think of walking barefoot on this beach!! You will find a lot of beach glass if you’re not scared to pick thru the trash and garbage- so disgusting to see. Everything from face masks to a huge oxygen tank..amid the assortment of plastic bottles and broken plastic pieces, dead animals, garbage bags filled with dog poop..you name it you’ll probably find it on this beach. Such a beautiful boardwalk and the city crew were planting plants to restore the wildlife but what’s the point when the wildlife area is filled with debris. The city or local beachcomber should host beach clean up events or even the people whose yards join the beach- should also join in. City should think of how this looks to tourists like me..and what opinions people form of the city when they see this beach."

"Gotta say I'm impressed by the beauty of this location. You can see right through the water it's so clear. It's a lot warmer than the South Shore Beach and has an isolated feel to it. I'm not familiar with the history of this space but I can tell it was once a project. The steps to get down aren't the safest or it would get 5 stars. If a group got together to clean up the degree and fix the steps, I really believe this spot would be booming with life! Also great place to catch minnows for fishing."

The Wetland Restoration: A Community Effort
This restoration is not just about aesthetics; it's about ecological function. Wetlands act as natural filters, improving water quality, and provide crucial habitats for migratory birds and other wildlife. The presence of a Butterfly Garden further emphasizes the park's commitment to supporting pollinators and showcasing the delicate balance of nature.
Visitors often remark on the quiet, humble beauty of the park, appreciating the effort put into its revitalization. While the beach itself can sometimes be marred by debris, the core of the park's appeal lies in its successful ecological transformation and the peaceful atmosphere it provides.
Navigating the Park: Accessibility and Beach Conditions
The beach area, while offering access to Lake Michigan, has received mixed reviews regarding cleanliness. Some visitors have noted significant amounts of beach glass, trash, and debris, including items like face masks and plastic waste. This has led to calls for more frequent clean-up events and community involvement to maintain the beauty of the shoreline.
Despite these challenges, the park's location on an inlet of Lake Michigan, protected by a breakwater, offers calmer waters compared to the open lake. This makes it a pleasant spot for a stroll, though swimming conditions can be affected by algae blooms.
