What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Echo Canyon is a challenging but rewarding hike with breathtaking summit views. Visitors praise the scenic beauty and sense of accomplishment, though many caution about the strenuous terrain, lack of shade, and limited parking. Preparation with ample water and sturdy footwear is highly recommended for a safe and enjoyable experience.
"Gorgeous setting, easy parking. Went at sunset on a Sunday, it was really peaceful. Plenty of birds chirping and the sun was at perfect golden hour. Hike is pretty steep but not too challenging - someone was in jeans and hardly any have major hiking equipment. Really peaceful place and good vibes."

"We hiked this today for the first time. My husband and I are very active and here on vacation. I would say this is a challenging hike. Definitely take your time and stop for breaks. Highly recommend you start early in the morning if possible. We started at 8 am and it was WARM on the way down. Wear sunscreen. I grabbed a lot of rocks and wish I had hiking gloves on! Best opportunity for parking if you go early. Must take a minimum of 2 water bottles per person, but should definitely take more. A protein bar would be a good addition as well. Other hikers are very friendly and helpful. Wear a hat to help keep you cool. Also wish I took tissues because my nose got very runny! At the top, the views are beautiful! A couple got engaged when we were up there. Take your time going down and keep your body close to the rocks. Safety is priority!"

"Camelback Mountain and its iconic Echo Trail are a must for adventurous spirits. Rated as extremely difficult, this challenging hike rewards climbers with breathtaking views and a deep sense of accomplishment. The trail is scenic throughout, but its rugged terrain requires some bouldering and scrambling, adding excitement for those who enjoy a true physical test.
Preparation is key to tackling Echo Trail safely and successfully. Hiking shoes with strong grip are essential, as are ample water supplies and sunblock, since there is no shade. The best time to embark on this journey is right at sunrise—parking is readily available, the heat is manageable, and the early morning light paints the landscape in spectacular colors.
While it’s not for the faint-hearted, completing the Echo Trail offers unforgettable panoramic views from the summit. If you're up for an exhilarating challenge, Camelback Mountain will not disappoint. It’s well worth every step."

The Echo Canyon Hike: A Strenuous Ascent
Hikers often describe the experience as a vigorous test of endurance. The trail is almost entirely exposed, meaning there's very little shade, making hydration and sun protection absolutely critical. Many visitors recommend starting at sunrise to avoid the intense desert heat and to secure parking. The terrain involves navigating large boulders and requires using your hands for balance and ascent in several sections, which some find exhilarating and others find demanding.
Despite the difficulty, the reward at the summit is immense. Hikers are treated to breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the entire Phoenix metropolitan area, the Salt River, and the surrounding desert mountains. It's a popular spot for proposals and offers a profound sense of accomplishment. The trail is well-maintained, and fellow hikers are often friendly and helpful, sharing tips and encouragement.
Navigating Parking and Crowds
To maximize your chances of securing a parking spot, arriving at sunrise is the most consistently recommended strategy. This not only helps with parking but also allows you to hike in cooler temperatures, which is crucial in the Phoenix heat. If you miss out on parking at Echo Canyon, the Cholla Trailhead is another option, though it also experiences similar parking challenges. Some visitors opt for ride-sharing services, but this can also be subject to availability and surge pricing during peak times.
Beyond parking, crowd levels can significantly impact the hiking experience. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends. If you prefer a more solitary experience, aim for early weekday mornings. The trail can become quite busy, with hikers often waiting for others to pass on narrower sections or during scrambles.

While the hiking trail is the most prominent feature, the area's geological formations and the mountain's imposing presence have likely inspired local stories and legends over time. The Praying Monk rock formation, visible from the trail, is a prime example of how the landscape captures the imagination.
Historically, Camelback Mountain and its canyons have been a significant natural feature for the indigenous peoples of the region. The trails, including Echo Canyon, are part of a landscape that has been shaped by both natural forces and human interaction for centuries.
