What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hirundo Wildlife Refuge is praised for its peaceful atmosphere, abundant wildlife, and free admission, offering a serene escape into nature. However, some visitors find the trail signage and maintenance inconsistent, leading to navigation difficulties and overgrown paths. Bug spray is a must for a comfortable experience.
"It's open Dawn's to Dusk. Except for being under the apparent path of a private pilot flight school, this place is peaceful & serene. Crickets, frogs, birds, owls, bubbling stream, wind blowing through the trees and the sound of your footsteps on the pine-needle or crushed-stone paths are all you'll hear. There is educational signage and places to sit in the Pond area. No seating on the wilderness trails, but there are directional path markers. Hiking shoes or Gym footwear are all you need, but I would not recommend sandals or flip flops. You can drive or walk into the area (I drove in) or if you want to take children across the street to a section for kids, its better to park at the entrance --small area right off the paved main road."

"Beautiful spot! Highly recommend bug spray, there's a lot of mosquitoes but it is their natural habitat so it's to be expected. Was only here a short while but hope to come back for a whole day soon ! Tons of mushrooms 🍄"

"Wonderful set of well marked trails. Saw Bald Eagles, Wood Ducks, numerous Red Squirrels and chipmunks and many species of plants. You can drive into a parking area within the preserve at gate #1 despite the fact it says no motorized vehicles. Very glad to see hunting is prohibited, and no pets either, making it a real preserve. Lots of shorter trails and even some bathrooms near parking area. Free."
