Reviews Summary

Visitors find Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 interesting for its unique above-ground tombs and historical significance, especially when viewed from the gates. While its closure for repairs is a disappointment, the surrounding Garden District and the insights provided by guides often make the visit worthwhile. The cemetery's atmospheric and slightly eerie nature appeals to those interested in New Orleans' darker history and culture. InstagramReddit

"The Lafayette Cemetery # 1 was the last stop on our French Quarter Phantom's Garden District Tour. While this can't compare to the Recoleta Cemetery's (Buenos Aires) grandeur, it was still interesting to see but our guide's information was the best part.

THE GROUNDS:
High walls surround the city block-sized cemetery which opened in 1833 and is full of mausoleums and tombs of all styles, shaded by old magnolia trees. A lack of greenery and poshness is its only downfall. We learned that there is a proper way to be buried in the Big Easy due to the area's shallow water table, the rules of family interment, and the gruesome facts of "natural cremation". While some of its residents were well-known, none of their names rang a bell for me. A few mausoleums stood out, including a white one made out of metal that inspired author Anne Rice in her book Interview With The Vampire, one of my least favorite movies, LOL. One grave in particular wasn't properly dug which resulted in human remains surfacing above ground and are still visible today.

OVERALL:
A definite highlight of our tour but not the most compelling graveyard we've been to."

"Beautiful private cemetery. Lots of people were trying to get in but it is locked and you must call and have family there is the only way I believe."

"Unfortunately it was closed when we tried to go see it, but it looked cool from the gate! Would still recommend walking by and taking a peak inside."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Burial Practices of New Orleans

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, like many historic New Orleans cemeteries, features above-ground tombs due to the city's high water table and marshy soil. Traditional in-ground burials are difficult and can lead to bodies surfacing. This necessity led to the development of elaborate mausoleums and tombs, creating the distinctive cityscape seen in cemeteries like Lafayette No. 1. These structures are often designed to be family crypts, passed down through generations. Reddit

Visitors often learn about the fascinating, and sometimes grim, realities of these burial practices. Topics like the rules of family interment, the concept of burial insurance through society tombs, and even the historical practice of 'natural cremation' (where bodies would decompose and be re-interred in smaller boxes) are part of the cemetery's narrative. This unique approach to death and remembrance is a significant part of New Orleans' cultural identity. InstagramReddit

Even when closed, observing the variety of tomb styles from the perimeter offers a glimpse into the artistry and history. From simple, elegant structures to more ornate mausoleums, each tells a story of the individuals and families interred within. The craftsmanship is often highlighted by visitors who appreciate the detailed work. Reddit

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1: A Cinematic Star

Beyond its historical significance, Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 has served as a backdrop for numerous films and television shows, adding to its mystique. Its atmospheric setting and unique architecture make it a sought-after location for productions looking to capture the eerie charm of New Orleans. Instagram

Filmmakers are drawn to the cemetery's gothic aesthetic, which perfectly complements stories involving mystery, the supernatural, or historical dramas. The distinctive above-ground tombs and the sense of age create a visually compelling environment that enhances the storytelling. Instagram

While specific film credits can vary, the cemetery's presence in popular media has cemented its status as an iconic New Orleans landmark. This cinematic connection further fuels the interest of visitors who are fans of the movies or simply appreciate its photogenic qualities. TikTokInstagram

The Closure and Future of Lafayette Cemetery No. 1

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 has been closed to the public since September 2019, undergoing extensive repairs. This closure has been a point of concern for locals and visitors alike, as it's a significant historical site. InstagramReddit

Many visitors express frustration at the prolonged closure, noting a lack of visible repair work. The cemetery's importance to the Garden District's heritage and its appeal to tourists mean that its reopening is eagerly anticipated.
