What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Josephine Overlook offers a strenuous but incredibly rewarding hike with some of the best views on Minnesota's North Shore. Visitors rave about the dramatic panoramas of Lake Superior and the challenging yet navigable trail. Some note the steepness and potential for muddy conditions, emphasizing the need for proper footwear and respecting the reservation land.
"Steep but great hike with a few amazing viewing points. Around 4 miles round trip. My favorite spot is at
47°58'39.2"N 89°39'19.1"W
I do not recommend hiking further NW to the Google pin of Mt Josephine as there's no more good viewing points and the trail continues off the mountain to who knows where."

"The best hike I've ever done in Minnesota. Pretty steep all the way up, but the trail is pretty clear and easy to navigate. To shorten the hike, don't park at where the trailhead is labeled on maps, go another 2/3 mile down the road to an unmarked driveway on the left side if you're traveling East. There is a small parking area up against a fence that didn't have any signs saying you can't park there. From there, take the trail west about 1/4 mile until it spurs off to the right and starts climbing the mountain. Absolutely insane views in all directions. Please tread lightly as this is on reservation land and pack out what you pack in."

"Beautiful area. Combine this with a stop at High Falls in Grand Portage. Hike is pretty steep for a long ways, but the views are worth it. We completed this hike with 10 and 11 year olds but saw younger kids as well."
