What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Moss Beach Distillery is highly praised for its spectacular ocean views and historical ambiance, making it a popular spot for both dining and experiencing local legends. While the food is generally good, particularly the seafood, some visitors note that service can be inconsistent, especially on the busy patio. Despite minor drawbacks, the breathtaking scenery and unique atmosphere make it a memorable destination.
"We saw the sign out on the highway and were thrilled to find a hidden distillery! Ooops, it's not actually a distillery! It was time for lunch and a break from the road so it was well worth the stop even without the craft spirits!! The view is spectacular and the history is a fun addition to our travels. It was raining so no outside seating, we enjoyed everything from the dry warmth inside. The staff was very subdued, not really friendly, just going through the motions and providing basic service. The chowder tasted like a cream of something soup with clams in it so I wasn't impressed! However, the grilled fish tacos were wonderful with plenty of fish and a super tasty and spicy sauce that was amazing! The soft corn tortillas mad them perfect! Hubby's burger was just okay, some seasoning definitely would have helped and the bacon needed to be cooked a bit longer. All in all, a nice experience and would return those those views any time!"

"I’ve been here several times in the past and I have to say that my experience was better then. My rating is for my recent visit which I’m hoping is not the new normal.
The outdoor patio area has lost its charm and I’m not sure exactly why, but here are a few of my observations. There was one waiter for the entire outside patio area. Although he was efficient there were just too many table to serve in order to deliver good service to everyone. We waited quite a while before we got our drinks. When it was time to order, I asked what he recommended. Instead of reviewing specials and/or popular dishes, he told me that everything is good and he can’t give me a recommendation. This led to me asking questions about an array of dishes and all of a sudden ( I think out of frustration) he recommended a dish for me. He wasn’t rude at all, just over tasked. When the food arrived, my dish was lukewarm. It definitely waited somewhere and got too cold before making it to the table.
I would return as I think it must have been an off night. I definitely would not sit outside though if the staffing stays the same for the patio area."

"⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4-Star Review
I came to Moss Beach Distillery today and really enjoyed the experience. The ocean views and relaxed outdoor patio made it a great place to sit back and take in the coast. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was casual but welcoming.
The food was good overall. The clam steamers were fresh and flavorful, paired nicely with the pesto garlic bread. The burger and fries hit the spot—juicy, well-seasoned, and generous in size. The kids’ nuggets and fries were simple but perfect for little ones.
Prices are a bit on the higher side, but that’s expected for the location and view. Between the scenery, service, and quality of the meal, it was a very enjoyable visit. I’d definitely come back, especially for a relaxed lunch or sunset dinner."

A Taste of History and Haunting
The most famous legend is that of the 'Blue Lady,' believed to be the ghost of Mary Ellen, a young waitress who fell in love with a piano player. Their forbidden romance, set against the backdrop of the roaring twenties, is said to have ended tragically, and her spirit is rumored to still linger. Visitors often report sightings or a sense of presence, adding an intriguing layer to the dining experience.
While the ghost stories add a unique charm, the distillery also offers a taste of its past through its ambiance and location. The building itself, perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, evokes a sense of bygone eras. It's a place where you can enjoy a meal while contemplating its Prohibition-era secrets and the enduring tales of the Blue Lady.
Culinary Delights with a View
Beyond the seafood specialties, the burger is a popular choice, often described as juicy and well-seasoned, while the clam steamers are noted for their freshness. For those with younger diners, a dedicated kids' menu ensures that families can find suitable options. The restaurant also offers a selection of salads and other American classics, catering to a variety of palates.
While the food receives generally positive feedback, it's worth noting that some reviews mention inconsistencies or that prices are on the higher side, which is typical for a restaurant with such a prime location and view. However, the overall consensus is that the quality of the food, combined with the spectacular scenery, makes for a memorable dining experience.
