What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pluto's Cave is a unique and awe-inspiring natural wonder, praised for its ancient lava tubes and stunning views of Mount Shasta. Visitors appreciate the free admission and the magical light within the caves. However, the poorly marked trails are a significant drawback, often leading to confusion and detours, and some note the presence of graffiti and a distinct smell inside.
"Future visitors, take note: the track from the parking lot to the cave has very few signs. Thankfully, there’s cell signal the whole way, so keep your Google Maps handy unless you fancy starring in your own wilderness survival show.
The trickiest part is a fork in the trail that looks super inviting to the left because it offers a jaw-dropping panoramic view of Mt. Shasta. It’s practically impossible not to wander that way, hypnotized by the scenery. Judging by the worn paths visible on satellite images, MANY people before us have made the same mistake—and my husband and I happily added our own footprints to that collective detour. 😂
Moral of the story: once you’ve picked a destination, try not to get distracted by shiny views along the way. (Easier said than done, especially with Mt. Shasta flexing in the background!)
If you want to stay on the right path: at the fork, look for two trees on the right. Walk between them, and you’ll spot the actual trail to the cave.
We even built a little rock marker on the ground…though who knows how long it will survive the elements. Here’s hoping future travelers don’t end up circling under the blazing sun like we did. But hey—if you do, just chalk it up to divine intervention wanting you to enjoy a longer outdoor adventure. 😉"

"The caves are really cool, and easy to navigate once you get to them.
However, the trails leading to the caves are not well marked at all, and it's easy to go off trail without realizing. I highly recommend taking screen shots of your map if you're using your phone to navigate, and bring an old school compass with you as well to prevent getting lost.
There is some rock scrambling to get down to the caves entrance, so wear supportive shoes and take your time climbing down."

"Pluto’s Caves is an absolute must-visit if you’re in the Mt. Shasta area! Tucked away just a short drive from town, the caves offer a fascinating mix of adventure, natural beauty, and a sense of ancient history. The lava tubes are surprisingly expansive, with huge cathedral-like chambers that make you pause in awe.
It’s an amazing spot for photographers, hikers, or anyone who enjoys exploring unique landscapes. The light streaming in through collapsed sections of the caves creates a magical glow—perfect for capturing unforgettable photos. Even if you’ve been to lava tubes in Hawaii or Oregon, Pluto’s Caves feels distinct and special in its own way.
The trailhead is easy to access, and while the caves themselves aren’t difficult to explore, you’ll definitely want sturdy shoes and a good flashlight or headlamp. Once inside, you can go as deep as your sense of adventure takes you!"
