Mossbrae Falls is one of the most scenic waterfalls in California but it's technically illegal to go to. Why? Access to the falls is via a mile-long illegal hiking trail on the Union Pacific Railroad right of way; the City of Dunsmuir is seeking to finish a safe hiking trail that will include a bridge over the river at Hedge Creek Falls. Hopefully the new trail will be completed within 2 years...

Having trouble finding Mossbrae Falls? Don’t worry I gotchu with this hiking guide! . Google maps reviews are still saying they parked on the Dunsmuir Ave, across from Cave Springs Resort. And walked down scartlet way. I didn’t get towed or fined, but park at your own risk though. Parking in the neighborhood near the bridge didn’t seem like an option. This whole journey was worth it though and you...

"❤️❤️Such a beautiful and peaceful spot! The walk along the railway track was a little adventurous but totally worth it. Surrounded by nature, it felt calm and quiet the whole way. And then you reach Mossbrae Falls-wow. The water just flows down through the greenery like something out of a dream. It’s not a long hike, but the experience stays with you. Definitely one of my favorite hidden places in California."

"You gotta railroad tie walk to get there and the falls are, allegedly, private owned but everyone does it and it’s really worth the work getting there. Lots of offerings there and it does feel mystical…"

Jack Morris

"Beautiful falls with only a small walk to get there. The walk is down hill on a dirt trail that starts to the left of the gazebo.

Theres some parking on the side of the road right after making the turn driving to the falls. Maps took us to the wrong place so again, look for the parking on the side of the road. It’s just off the freeway and around the bend."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Access: The Railroad Tracks

The journey to Mossbrae Falls is intrinsically linked to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. This mile-long stretch is the primary, albeit unofficial, access route. Visitors must be acutely aware that these are active tracks, and trains do pass through. While many Redditors and social media creators mention the walk as part of the adventure, they also stress the importance of vigilance. InstagramReddit+1 It's crucial to listen for approaching trains and never assume a track is clear. Some users have noted that trains don't always sound their horns, adding another layer of caution. Reddit

This unofficial access means there are no marked trails or safety barriers. Sections of the embankment can be washed out, requiring careful footing. Reddit The City of Dunsmuir is reportedly working on a safe hiking trail, which may eventually include a bridge over the river near Hedge Creek Falls, offering a more official and secure way to experience the area. Instagram Until then, visitors must weigh the beauty of Mossbrae Falls against the risks associated with this unique approach. Instagram

The Mystique of Mossbrae Falls

Mossbrae Falls is often described as a hidden gem, a fairytale-like cascade tucked away in Northern California. Its beauty lies not just in the 52-foot drop of water but in the lush, verdant setting. Ferns and mosses cling to the rock face, creating a vibrant green backdrop that contrasts with the white spray of the water. Instagram+1 The falls flow directly into the Sacramento River, adding to the picturesque scene. Many visitors report a sense of peace and enchantment upon arrival, feeling as though they've discovered a secret natural wonder. Reddit

The 'mystical' quality is amplified by the journey itself. The walk along the railroad tracks, while potentially hazardous, adds an element of adventure and exclusivity. It feels like a reward for those who seek it out. Reddit The combination of the dramatic waterfall, the serene river, and the slightly clandestine access contributes to Mossbrae Falls' reputation as one of California's most captivating, albeit lesser-known, natural attractions. Photography at Mossbrae Falls

Capturing the magic of Mossbrae Falls requires a bit of planning and an eye for composition. The most striking views are often from the railroad tracks, looking towards the main cascade. A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to encompass the full grandeur of the falls and the surrounding greenery. Instagram Experimenting with different exposure times can also yield beautiful results; a slightly longer exposure can smooth the water into a silky curtain, while a faster shutter speed will freeze the droplets in motion. Instagram

Consider the lighting conditions. Late afternoon can provide warm, golden light that enhances the colors of the foliage and the water. However, early mornings can offer softer light and fewer crowds, allowing for more contemplative photography. Instagram Don't forget to explore the area around Hedge Creek Falls, which offers a different, yet equally photogenic, perspective, including the unique opportunity to walk behind the waterfall. Instagram Remember to be mindful of your surroundings, especially the train tracks, and prioritize safety over the perfect shot.
