Timing is Key for Manatee Sightings

We had good luck yesterday when we visited The Manatee Observation Deck in Mims yesterday! Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Haulover Canal Manatee Observation Deck for its accessibility and the joy of seeing manatees in their natural environment, often noting it's a worthwhile, free stop. While some have had less luck spotting them due to murky water or timing, the overall experience is described as enjoyable and a great wildlife encounter.

"Even in August there were quite a few manatees. This is very easily accessible. I'm sure it gets crowded during season but it was very enjoyable. There are no-seeums so use bug spray near dusk."

Joy Bodewes

"Stopped for a visit the second week of June. When we first arrived, the first 15 minutes we saw 2 manatees on the other side of the river. Soon, a very large boat passed through and must have scared them towards our observation deck. I would estimate 10-12 showed up right in front of us then. They stayed about 20 minutes and then disappeared back into the river. Great experience!"

Matt Barnes

"This location has a reasonable amount of parking spaces and a short walk to the observation deck along the river. The river has a constant flow and is very murky. We visited during the end of the 2nd week of March 2025. We did not spot any manatees. If there were any manatees, the water was too murky to see them. There are porta-toilets at one corner of the parking lot. No entrance fee and no parking fee. This place is good for a short stopover if I'm passing through this route, but I wouldn't plan this location as a main destination just to find manatees. Just on the opposite side of the road from this observation deck there are tree lines along the river bank that appear to be good for fishing (some attached photos)."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Manatee Behavior

Manatees, often called 'sea cows,' are gentle, herbivorous marine mammals. They are most active when water temperatures are above 70°F, seeking out warmer waters in cooler months. This makes the Haulover Canal a popular spot during the winter and spring. You might see them surfacing to breathe, feeding on seagrass, or simply lounging. Their closest living relatives are elephants! Instagram

When visiting, observe their natural behavior from a distance. Avoid touching or feeding them, as this can be harmful. The observation deck provides a safe and respectful way to witness these magnificent creatures. Patience is key; sometimes they are shy, and other times they will swim right up to the viewing area. Reddit

Key takeaway: Warmer water temperatures are your best bet for sightings. While they are present year-round, cooler months often concentrate them in these warmer canal waters. Reddit

Maximizing Your Visit

The Haulover Canal Manatee Observation Deck is a fantastic, free wildlife viewing opportunity. Visitors often report seeing manatees, especially when the water is warm. Some reviewers noted that a large boat passing through the canal can sometimes stir up the manatees and bring them closer to the deck. Reddit

Beyond the deck itself, the surrounding area offers a glimpse into Florida's coastal ecosystem. The canal connects the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, important estuarine environments. While the water can appear murky, it's teeming with life. Reddit

Pro-tip: If you don't see many manatees at the deck, try heading over the bridge and to the boat dock on the other side. This alternative spot is also known for manatee sightings. Reddit
