Wildlife Encounters in Mammoth Lakes
Incidents like the unfortunate euthanization of 'Victor the bear' highlight the importance of giving wildlife space. When campers do not secure their food properly or approach bears, it can lead to habituation, where the bears become accustomed to human presence and food sources. This often results in the bear being perceived as a threat, leading to tragic outcomes. The advice from locals and experienced visitors is consistent: never feed bears, keep a clean campsite, and maintain a safe distance if you encounter one.
When exploring areas around Mammoth Lakes, including trails and lakes accessible from The Village, always be aware of your surroundings. Carry bear spray if you plan on hiking, and know how to use it. The goal is to enjoy the incredible wildlife responsibly, ensuring that these animals can continue to thrive in their natural habitat for generations to come.
