"April 29, 2025: My first time skiing at Mammoth Mountain was my shortest ski day ever. I was shocked to learn last night that during this late-spring season, lifts open at the insanely early time of 7:30 a.m. (instead of normal 8:30, still way too early) and close at the obscenely early hour of 2 p.m.! (instead of normal 4:00; except for Chair 6, which stays open until 3 p.m.). 😲😲😡
I didn't get skis on until 12:39 p.m. (not a morning person). There was thunder as 2:00 neared -- first time I can ever recall hearing booms while skiing. When I got to Chair 1 at 1:57 for my last run off that area's terrain, I was stunned to see it already closed. Employees said all lifts closed early due to lightning in the area (I never saw any). Unbelievable.
Time on skis = a record low of 1:18. I skied (likely also a record low) 7.3 miles today. The only precipitation while I was on the mountain was a little sleet before the thunder began.
Lifts should run 9:30 or 10:00 to 4:30 or later. I've never been to a ski mountain in my entire life where they stopped at 2:00 p.m. (or anytime before 4:00 for that matter)."
