Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Makawao Forest Reserve for its cool, shaded trails and serene atmosphere, offering a welcome escape from Maui's heat. It's praised as a peaceful, multi-use area suitable for hiking and biking, though some note the lack of facilities and the rooty terrain. Overall, it's highly recommended for a refreshing nature experience.

"If you feel the need to escape the heat, come Upcountry to this lovely shaded forest hike. The main trail is a 6 mile loop, with several side trails for mountain biking. The County is building biking (BMX?) side tracks of varying ability. Hiking ability: moderate. We are working up our stamina to be able to do the 6 mile loop, but you can hike in, then out, to suit your ability level.

People, dog, bike and horse friendly with horse trailer parking at the first parking lot on the right. Ok for kids as well, but NOT stroller friendly due to roots crossing the trail in many areas.

There are picnic tables about a mile up the trail going in either direction, although not at the top of the loop, which seems like a common sense spot for one. Bring water and snacks! It may take longer than you expect, or be harder than you're prepared for, so keep hydrated and keep your energy up.

There are NO bathroom facilities, not even port-a-potties. You will be expected to "pack it out" if a bathroom emergency happens on trail. Maybe bring a day pack with some TP and zip-loc bags just in case?

Consensus: Highly recommend!"

"Gorgeous and can be briefly toured in one day, but for best results and a bit of a Hawaiian mountain wilderness experience, plan a 3-4 day camping trip."
