What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Santa Rita Lodge for its exceptional birdwatching opportunities, particularly the close encounters with hummingbirds and diverse species at the feeders. The friendly, family-run atmosphere and the well-equipped cabin kitchenettes are also frequently highlighted as positives. However, some guests note that the gift/coffee shop hours can be inconvenient for early morning birders, and the lack of nearby dining options requires visitors to come prepared with their own food.
"Visiting Madera Canyon this place is on the road that goes to the top of the mountain in the National Forest. They have many feeders out with seeds, a water feature and many hummingbird feeders. They get an amazing number and variety of birds everyday. So if you're into nature you should definitely stop by and check this out. They have a nice gift shop too. There were many wild turkeys there feeding when we arrived around 10:30 in the morning and my bird watching girlfriend observed several birds that she has not seen before. The hummingbird feeders were right in front of benches and they were fearless. We were only feet away from Anna's hummingbirds that were plentiful plus we saw one that has another name but it used to be called the magnificent hummingbird and also a broad build hummingbird and we saw a numerous of all of those. At times they were fighting with each other and chasing each other away from the feeders. They're very vocal. But there were many Mexican and other Jays and many other seed eating birds plus woodpeckers. Anyone that is not from the west would be guaranteed to see birds that they have not seen before there. It was a fun time and we made a contribution to support the cost of having the bird feeding area and the feed. It is quite an attraction and not to be missed"

"Wonderful staff and location. Definitely worth visiting for birders. The owner came out of his house after hours and opened the gift shop to help me look for my wallet, even though I wasn’t even staying here and only was there for Berylline hummingbird. I’ll definitely be staying here next time"

"This is a great spot for birders ! They get a five star for service because they have created a great bird habitat which can entertain you in the morning - but as a lodge catering to birders - they do need to get their gift/coffee shop open for birder hours - 830-9 am is just far too late for a birder who is up at daybreak and done by 9 and a coffee drinker- and there is no where else to get a decent coffee or much of anything - I would have marked them down greatly for this but their bird habitat is just so sweet- I would definitely return - it's a family business and Inmet father and daughter and both were so nice- my suggestion for the gift/coffee shop is to stagger the hours and close for a siesta or riposa 11-3 to help out us coffee drinking birders - it would also be superb and profitable I imagine for them if they would stock microwaveable breakfast sandwiches and offer packed lunches for birders - I would have paid a lot for a hot breakfast sandwich and a packed lunch -10 stars! bc the drive to the nearest store is prohibitive - but the cabins do have full and thoughtfully stocked kitchenettes so if you come prepared you'll be happy. - this is not a luxury property but a nature- filled wonderful spot !"
