This here is Bondcliff, the most remote NH 4,000 footer! No matter which trail you take it’s no less than 9 miles one-way. The easiest way is Lincoln woods trail & Bondcliff Trail. It’s got an iconic photo spot that’s very hard to get without someone taking your photo for you, but I managed to take this video without any body around! I used a pocket in my backpack and used some rocks to secure it ...

Reviews Summary

Bondcliff is lauded for its breathtaking, remote alpine summit and challenging, rewarding hikes like the Zealand-Bonds Traverse. Visitors praise the stunning views and the sense of accomplishment. However, the extreme remoteness, strenuous terrain, and potential for rapidly changing weather are significant challenges that require thorough preparation.

"I loved Bond cliff it was so beautiful, it was my last mountain I hiked on my 38 mile hike. This was a very long adventure but im so happy I was able to do it. I did the entire 38 miles by my self and met wonderful people along the way. I would definitely do this hike again but mabey next time with friends. The best part about Bond cliff is that I got to see where I hiked on the other side of the loop because there were no clouds which was a really good ending to this three day hike."

Matthew Elwell

"This is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking and scenic hikes in all of New England. However, it's also one of the most challenging, for many reasons. Here are all the essential details you need to know, so you can make an informed decision if you’re prepared for this adventure (please read this in full). Mileage and elevation gain vary by source. Below is the information provided by my Garmin Epix, which differs quite a bit from AllTrails.

Trail details
Trail Name: Zealand Bonds Traverse (I ventured southbound, some travel northbound – I picked southbound to get the harder part over first and to save the best summit for last – Bond Cliff). On this hike, you can check off 4 of the New Hampshire 4000 footers (from north to south: Zealand, West Bond, Bond, Bond Cliff)
Location: White Mountain National Forest. Starts at Zealand Trailhead in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. Ends at Lincoln Woods Trailhead (off the Kancamagus Highway) in Lincoln, New Hampshire.
Distance: 21.8 miles
Elevation gain: 4245’
Difficulty: strenuous/very hard. The vast majority of this trail has very rocky footing, which slows your pace and tires you out quickly. There are a few scrambles on the trail, but it’s not the grade of the hike that makes this hike so difficult.

Here are some other things to consider:
- Weather: it can turn on you in an instant, and you are without cellphone service for the vast majority of this hike.
- Water: There are points on this trail where you will be miles from the nearest source of water.
o First watersource is Zealand Falls Hut (~ 3mi from the trailhead; I was told it’s a filtered tap)
o ~1.5mi your next source is Zeacliff Pond (small pond with a slight detour off Twinway)
o Over 3 miles is your next source at Guyot Shelter (a small spring that requires a filter – a couple of hundred feet descent from Bondcliff Trail, you’ll find the spring right behind the shelter)
o Your next reliable water source is over 8 miles away, when the Bondcliff Trail levels out on the East Branch Pemigewasset River. There are small seasonal brooks in between, but they were dry.
o Water filter: I personally enjoy this one the most “Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter Filtration System with 32-oz. Pouches” (it’s most compact and user-friendly, of other filtration systems I’ve tried, I personally don’t care for iodine tablets as the side effeects can be severe if you get the wrong ratio, but that’s from my non-expert opionion)

Last bits of advice :)
Even for conditioned hikers, this is a trek, a marathon, NOT a sprint. Get an early start, bring extra layers of clothing, pace yourself, and enjoy the incredible views! But most importantly, be safe and be prepared; this is far from a casual day hike! This is a long, demanding and incredibally rewarding adventure."

Benjamin Moreau

"Hard to get too on a day hike but my absolute favorite view during the Pemi loop and worth a long out and back from Zealand hut as well. Just breathtaking."

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Bondcliff is generally not recommended for families with young children due to its extreme remoteness and strenuous, long trails (9+ miles one-way). The rocky terrain and significant elevation gain can be overwhelming for younger hikers. Reddit+1 If you are determined to experience this area with children, consider shorter, more accessible hikes in the White Mountain National Forest, or focus on the initial, flatter sections of trails like the Lincoln Woods Trail for a taste of the wilderness without the extreme commitment. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Zealand-Bonds Traverse: A Challenging Classic

The Zealand-Bonds Traverse is a highly sought-after hike in the White Mountain National Forest, renowned for its challenging terrain and the opportunity to summit four New Hampshire 4,000-footers: Zealand, West Bond, Bond, and Bondcliff. This trek typically covers around 21.8 miles with over 4,200 feet of elevation gain, making it a strenuous undertaking that requires excellent physical conditioning and careful planning. Reddit The trail features predominantly rocky footing, which significantly slows down hikers and increases fatigue. Reddit Many hikers choose to travel southbound, starting at the Zealand Trailhead and ending at the Lincoln Woods Trailhead, to save the most striking summit, Bondcliff, for last. Reddit

This traverse is not for the faint of heart and demands respect for the mountain environment. Hikers must be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, as the mountains can turn treacherous in an instant. Reddit The remoteness of the area means that cell service is virtually non-existent for most of the hike, emphasizing the need for self-sufficiency and preparedness. Reddit Proper navigation tools, such as a map and compass, are essential, and hikers should be comfortable using them. Reddit

Key considerations for the Zealand-Bonds Traverse include water availability and the need for extra layers of clothing. Reliable water sources are scarce, with significant stretches between them. Reddit Carrying a water filter or purification tablets is highly recommended. Reddit The weather can shift dramatically, so packing extra insulating layers, a waterproof shell, and a hat is crucial, even during warmer months. Reddit Despite the challenges, the reward of reaching the summit of Bondcliff and taking in the expansive, pristine views makes this traverse an unforgettable adventure for experienced hikers. Reddit+1

Navigating Water Sources and Safety on Bondcliff

Water availability is a critical concern for anyone planning a hike to Bondcliff, especially for longer treks like the Zealand-Bonds Traverse or the Pemi Loop. The White Mountain National Forest is known for its rugged terrain, and reliable water sources can be few and far between. Hikers must be prepared to carry sufficient water and have a plan for refilling. Reddit The first potential water source is often near Zealand Falls Hut, approximately 3 miles from the Zealand Trailhead, which may offer filtered tap water. Reddit Further along, Zeacliff Pond is a small pond that requires a slight detour off the Twinway trail, about 1.5 miles after the hut. Reddit

For those continuing on the Bondcliff Trail, Guyot Shelter offers a small spring about 3 miles past Zeacliff Pond. This spring requires a filter and involves a short descent from the main trail. Reddit Beyond Guyot Shelter, the next reliable water source is over 8 miles away, typically found along the East Branch Pemigewasset River as the Bondcliff Trail levels out. Reddit While there may be small seasonal brooks in between, they can be dry, especially during drier periods. Therefore, carrying a reliable water filter, such as a Sawyer Squeeze, or purification tablets is non-negotiable for safety and comfort. Reddit

Beyond water, overall safety on Bondcliff hinges on preparedness for the challenging environment. The lack of cell service means that hikers must be self-reliant in case of emergencies. Reddit It's vital to inform someone of your hiking plans, including your intended route and expected return time. Reddit Carrying a first-aid kit, knowing basic first-aid, and being aware of potential hazards like rocky terrain and sudden weather changes are all part of a safe hiking strategy. Reddit The remoteness of Bondcliff underscores the importance of respecting the wilderness and being fully prepared for a demanding, yet incredibly rewarding, outdoor experience. Reddit+1
