Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning natural beauty of Lincoln Woods, particularly the iconic suspension bridge and refreshing Rocky Glen Falls. The historic railway bed trail is a unique feature, and many appreciate the well-maintained paths and friendly atmosphere. However, parking can be a significant challenge, especially on busy days, and some find the trail terrain requires more robust footwear than anticipated.

"The furbabies and I walked to the falls. After we got there a much needed cool down in the water was needed. The walking is easy it used to be a train track some wood planks are still across the walking path with spikes in the still. The only bad part was on our way back to my truck one of my flip flop straps broke and finished the last 2.5 miles bare foot. Otherwise it was enjoyable. And very beautiful everywhere you look."

Dusty Mitchell

"We hiked to the falls then back. The way up took us almost 3 hours because we made 3 pit stops along the way and the way back took just under an hour and a half. We saw many people swimming in the waterfall area but we were not dressed appropriately for swimming however it looked fun and probably was so refreshing. We did sit on the giant rocks and have lunch we had packed. We saw a ton of people walking dogs, running, and riding bikes. The only bird we saw was a wood pecker. Surprisingly there were so little bugs, but we still put on bug spray just in case. Definitely should have worn hiking shoes…. Did this in adidas sambas and my dogs are definitely barking."

Ashley Marie

"This is one of my favorite trails in New England. it is beautiful. well kept ample parking low-cost and the people on the trail are so nice. What I really appreciate is the history of this trail as most of the beginning trail is a former railway where the railroad spikes still protrude out of the ground."

Visitors have reported encountering flooded sections of trails, particularly after heavy rain, which can necessitate detours or turning back.Reddit Always check local conditions and be prepared for the possibility of wet or impassable trails.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, exploring the trails branching off the main path can reveal hidden gems. The beauty of Lincoln Woods lies in its diverse landscapes, from open railway beds to dense forest and cascading waterfalls.

The Historic Significance of Lincoln Woods

Lincoln Woods holds a fascinating history as a former railway line. The Boston and Maine Railroad once operated a line through this area, transporting timber and passengers. The remnants of this era are still visible today, most notably the occasional protruding railroad spikes along the main trail, serving as a tangible link to the past.Reddit This historical context adds a unique layer to the visitor experience, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of those who utilized this route decades ago.

The transformation of the railway into a recreational trail is a common story in many natural areas, preserving the corridor for public enjoyment. The relatively flat nature of the former track bed makes it ideal for multi-use trails, accommodating hikers, bikers, and even horseback riders in some sections. This adaptive reuse highlights the evolving relationship between human infrastructure and natural landscapes.

Understanding this history enriches your visit. As you traverse the path, imagine the sounds and sights of a bustling railway. The suspension bridge is a prime subject, providing a dramatic foreground element against the backdrop of the river and surrounding forest. Capturing the bridge from various angles, especially during the soft light of sunrise or sunset, can yield stunning results.Reddit The interplay of light and shadow through the trees also creates compelling compositions.

Rocky Glen Falls presents another picturesque scene. The cascading water, especially when captured with a slightly longer exposure, can create a silky, ethereal effect. The surrounding rocks and lush greenery add texture and color to your shots. Don't overlook the smaller cascades and pools along the stream, which can offer intimate and beautiful photographic moments.Reddit

The diverse flora and fauna, including birds like woodpeckers, also offer chances for wildlife photography.
