What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Tar Hollow State Park for its beautiful, secluded campgrounds and challenging hiking trails, offering a great escape into nature. The staff, particularly maintenance worker Casey, are highlighted for their helpfulness and dedication. However, some visitors have experienced disappointment due to unannounced park renovations and the pervasive lack of cell service, which can hinder communication and navigation.
"I wish I could give a better review, but the place was shut down for renovation. Unless I missed something, there was no notification online that it was not open. We drove in, saw most of the park attractions were closed, then left. I was disappointed because I have the Ohio State Parks passport book and this is a park I haven't visited yet. Avoid 2025 and try next year."
Steve Karl
"Great facilities and staff. The maintenance guy, Casey, went out of his way to make sure things were right for us. He was very responsive and helpful. This was one of our best trips. There's a lot of things to see nearby and plenty to do in the park too. I'm looking forward to returning again some time. Thank you Casey and the rest of the crew that makes the park great!"
Brian Andrews
"Primitive sites as you first come in to left are nice, but Tar Hollow has frequent night time traffic, so you’ll most likely hear any vehicles entering or exiting the park. There are primitive first come first serve up by fire tower.
Electric sites are nice, either two foundation options (blacktop or grass). Blacktop foundation sites appear to look smaller than grassy foundation sites.
Several items available for rental, lots of planned activities through camping season. Beach area is small, clean. There are challenging hiking trails in the park, as well as options near Hocking."
