Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Koloiki Ridge Trail for its stunning panoramic views at the lookout, offering vistas of Moloka'i and Maui. The shaded path through pine and guava trees is appreciated, making for a pleasant walk. However, some find it less of a 'hike' and more of an access road, noting the need to yield to vehicles.

"Great trail. Starts at the adventure park and only took about 2 hours for the 4 miles out and back. Great views at the end of molokai and maui. A lot of guava trees in between the pine trees. It's all well marked and is mostly for the utvs, bicycles, and even 4wd vehicles from the park and others, but still a nice walk."

"100% an access road for 4 seasons activities outrageously labeled as a hiking path. This 10' wide bulldozed path has all the excitement of walking down a native Hawaiian's driveway. When signs tell pedestrians to yield for off road vehicles then the priorities are clear for the path. Only an exciting hike for someone that would stay at a 4 seasons, but the view at the end is pretty cool."

"Starting at Adventure Park and walking to the Koloiki lookout and back takes about 2 and a half hours.

The lookout is a gorgeous view of Moloka'i and Maui as well as the gulches and valleys of Lana'i.

Koloiki shares a part of Munro trail to get to the lookout. The trail has some up and down and isn't too challenging.

For a more challenging hike the Kaiholena Trail follows the tree ridge line and starts on the Koloiki (after the water reservoir) and ends near the lookout. The trail is marked by pink tape on trees. The adventure park caretakers can help if you need directions."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Trail's Nature

The Koloiki Ridge Trail is a unique experience as it's primarily an access road for the Adventure Park and Four Seasons activities. This means it's a well-maintained, 10-foot wide path rather than a rugged, natural trail. While this might disappoint some seeking a wilderness hike, it offers a comfortable and accessible way to experience the island's interior. Visitors should be aware that they will need to yield to UTVs, bicycles, and 4WD vehicles that use the path regularly. Reddit

Despite its utilitarian nature, the trail provides a pleasant journey through a mix of pine and abundant guava trees, offering good shade for most of the hike. The path features some undulating terrain, with gentle ups and downs that make it a bit more engaging than a flat walk. The overall experience is often described as a nice walk, especially for those who appreciate the natural beauty and the payoff at the end. Reddit

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, the Kaiholena Trail is mentioned as an alternative that follows a tree ridge line and starts from the Koloiki area, marked by pink tape on trees. This suggests that while Koloiki Ridge Trail is the main artery, other, more rugged paths exist for the truly adventurous. Reddit

The Rewarding Koloiki Ridge Lookout

The highlight of the Koloiki Ridge Trail is undoubtedly the Koloiki Ridge Lookout at the end of the 2-mile (one-way) path. This viewpoint offers spectacular, unobstructed panoramic views that are consistently praised by visitors. From this vantage point, you can gaze out at the neighboring islands of Moloka'i and Maui, a truly breathtaking sight. Reddit

Beyond the distant islands, the lookout also provides stunning vistas of the dramatic gulches and valleys of Lanai itself. The expansive scenery makes the relatively easy hike well worth the effort. It's a perfect spot for reflection, photography, and appreciating the vastness of the Hawaiian landscape. Many describe the view as the ultimate payoff for the trek. Reddit

Given the importance of this viewpoint, planning your visit to coincide with good weather and clear skies will maximize the photographic and visual experience. The journey to the lookout is part of the charm, but the destination is what truly captivates visitors. Reddit
