Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Charles County Circuit Court are mixed, with significant praise for the helpfulness of the clerk's office staff in assisting with forms and procedures. However, the family court division has faced strong criticism for perceived bias and decisions that some feel do not prioritize children's best interests, leading to frustration and calls for systemic reform.
"The magistrate was sexist. She didn't listen to anything even with documented proof. She couldn't get past my brother not being able to see the his kids because his estranged wife had prevented him from seeing them by constantly moving, not providing an address, and not allowing him to see his kids. She didn't pay attention to the fact of my niece leaving the care of her mother's house and going to my brother house because of the treatment that occured at her mother's house. The mother did not have the kids enrolled into school for 2 1/2 years and did not enrolled them until my brother tried to gain custody of the kids. She leaves the older kids home to take care of the younger child who has autism and he epileptic. He is not in any type of therapy. She has neglected medical needs and education. Education does not seem to be important in the state of Maryland the fact of the truancy law is not be taken seriously. The mother takes the child supports and spends it on her boyfriends. The mother tried given the kids weed gummies and offering them vapes. Now the magistrate said she knows when kids are being coached and knows when they are lying but couldn't tell the kids were lying (because they admitted to their father that they did). There was a lot more issues going on but I will leave inside the home. What I don't understand is the magistrate calling the mother in the middle court (the mother knew about court and said it was childish and said she wasn't coming). Because the magistrate called her she showed up at the end of court, giving her more time and acknowledging her lies. This case wasn't based off of facts but rather personal judgments."

"This court is a disgrace to what family court is supposed to represent. Charles County Circuit Court has rightfully come under scrutiny for how it handles custody and visitation — and in my opinion, rightfully so. This court has shown a consistent, deliberate pattern of minimizing the role of fathers in children's lives, even in cases where no abuse or danger exists. Fathers are often reduced to visitors — sometimes only granted 48 days out of the entire year — while full custody is handed to emotionally unstable mothers without question.
It’s 2025. The psychological damage caused by fatherlessness is well documented. There is no excuse for a modern court to continue making decisions that go directly against the well-being of children. Decades of research prove that kids do better in every measurable category — school performance, mental health, avoiding jail, avoiding teen pregnancy — when both parents are active in their lives. Charles County knows this. Judges know this. So why do they keep doing the opposite?
It’s not ignorance. It’s intentional. And it’s destroying families.
Charles County family court is stuck in outdated, sexist thinking — constantly favoring mothers regardless of the facts. If you’re a father hoping to be involved in your child’s life, don’t expect fairness here. Expect bias. Expect stress. Expect to watch your child suffer from decisions that this court defends in the name of “best interest,” while doing the exact opposite.
The system here needs federal oversight. These judges are knowingly contributing to childhood trauma and family breakdown. Until there’s accountability, Charles County Circuit Court will remain one of the most harmful family courts in the state of Maryland."

"I made a call to the Circuit Court Office and had the pleasure of speaking with Seth, a true professional. I called for information that he did not have, however Seth went out of his way to search for anything he could to help me. I am super grateful and wanted to share, because I’m sure more people complain than give praise! So shout out to Seth for being a caring human being! Have the best day EVER!"

Navigating Family Court Challenges
One recurring theme is the court's handling of child neglect and educational neglect. Critics point to instances where mothers allegedly failed to enroll children in school for extended periods or neglected medical needs, yet the court's decisions did not fully reflect these issues. The perception is that personal judgments may sometimes outweigh factual evidence presented in court.
For those facing family court proceedings, it is crucial to be thoroughly prepared. This includes gathering all relevant documentation, understanding the legal standards for custody and visitation in Maryland, and potentially seeking advice from legal professionals or advocacy groups. Community members suggest that while the court system aims for the 'best interest of the child,' the interpretation and application of this standard can be contentious.
The Role of Court Staff and Services
This assistance is invaluable for individuals representing themselves, as legal and official paperwork can be complex. The clerk's office is noted for making online court forms easy to read and understand, simplifying the process of transferring judgments or initiating new cases. This level of support can significantly reduce stress for those unfamiliar with the legal system.
However, some visitors have encountered difficulties with entrance security personnel, citing instances where access was denied despite sufficient time remaining in the workday. This has led to calls for better coordination and adherence to posted hours to ensure smoother access for all individuals needing court services.
Community Events and Local Flavor
La Plata also boasts a local dining scene that visitors often explore. Marie's Diner is a popular spot for classic American breakfast and comfort food, with its Belgian waffles being a highlight. For those seeking different flavors, Karibbean Fire offers a taste of the Caribbean with dishes like oxtail and curry chicken, and is noted as a black-owned business.
These local establishments and events contribute to the overall experience of visiting the area, providing a glimpse into the community beyond the court's official functions.
