What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Friendship Garden Kaneohe for its beautiful bay views and serene forest trails, offering a rewarding hike for various fitness levels. While the lower loop is accessible, the upper trails present a more challenging adventure. The primary drawback is the extremely limited parking, which can be a significant inconvenience.
"One great little trail in a residential area. According to the post at the entrance of the trail, it’s over 100 years old with a lots of exposed roots. There were some easy climbing and steps, but all pretty easy and fit for just about any age. The views were splendid. The lower loop (easier) trail is about 0.5 miles and the upper loop trail is a bit longer and steeper. The downside: only has parking. spaces for 2-3 cars."

"Relatively easy trail, however it connects to a harder trail that I definitely would not recommend to do unprepared (lol). Other than that the trail itself was fairly short and sweet :)
Also, there are a lot of stairs/inclines so keep that in mind ☝️"

"This is a very simple hike… steep and wet, but if you take it easy it’s fine… HOWEVER, if you guys would like to keep going on the trail that starts from the top, then it gets hard… you might even need to use the ropes that people have set up.
Parking!!! There is basically one space to park… parking is TERRIBLE. Don’t park and have your tires on the street… that’s a no no"

However, the upper loop and Oneawa Hills Trail are not recommended for younger children due to steep drop-offs, challenging inclines, and potentially slippery conditions. Older children who enjoy a bit of a challenge might find these sections exciting, but parental supervision is crucial.

Navigating the Trails
The upper loop is where the adventure truly begins. This section is steeper and more challenging, featuring exposed roots, rocks, and potentially muddy conditions, especially after rain. It connects to the Oneawa Hills Trail, which can be quite demanding and may require using ropes that hikers have set up for assistance.
It's crucial to assess your fitness level and preparedness before tackling the upper trails. While the lower loop is accessible for most, the upper sections are best suited for experienced hikers or those seeking a more strenuous workout.
The Scenic Rewards
These viewpoints are ideal for photography and offer a rewarding experience after the climb. Many visitors find the vistas to be a perfect spot to pause, take a breath, and soak in the beauty of Oahu's windward coast.
Beyond the bay views, the trails themselves offer a diverse range of vegetation, from lush tropical plants to a unique bamboo forest, adding to the sensory experience of the hike.
Understanding the History and Context
Some sources mention the garden was created to cement friendship bonds between Himeji and Phoenix, but this seems to refer to the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, not the one in Kaneohe, Hawaii. The Kaneohe location is more commonly associated with its hiking trails and scenic overlooks.
Regardless of its specific historical naming, the trail offers a glimpse into the natural beauty and local trails that residents and visitors alike can enjoy on Oahu.
