Some of the few tree removals we did at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Across 96 acres and literally hundreds of trees, we only needed to remove a few trees that were hazardous and at risk of failing or impacting the surrounding area and headstones. Shown are just a few removed trees compared to the hundreds of trees that were pruned or had static cables and brace rods installed. We are honored ...

I visited Mountain Home Cemetery for the first time recently (Autumn 2024) for the first time when I was in Kalamazoo for the day. This cemetery has over 7,800 burials since it opened in the late 1830s and is one of two public cemeteries operated by the city.
I will say I was impressed. This is an old-timey "grand cemetery" and is gorgeous with rolling hills old shade trees with particularly beautiful views of the Kalamazoo valley from the high west end (Jewish section) and a lot of interesting old grave markers. I wish i had more time to walk and explore."

"A beautiful cemetery, and lots of history. A great place to walk and celebrate all of the people who have lived and died. It does have a problem with destroyed stones and stones falling and not being helped."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into History

Mountain Home Cemetery, established in the late 1830s, is one of Kalamazoo's oldest public cemeteries. It spans over 7,800 burials and serves as a testament to the city's rich past. Walking through its grounds is like stepping back in time, with each weathered headstone telling a story of lives lived and legacies left behind. The cemetery is operated by the city and is a significant historical landmark. Reddit

The landscape itself contributes to the historical ambiance. Rolling green hills are adorned with mature shade trees, creating a serene and picturesque environment. The western end, specifically the Jewish section, is noted for its elevated position offering particularly beautiful and expansive views of the Kalamazoo valley. This combination of historical depth and natural beauty makes it a compelling destination for those interested in local history and peaceful contemplation. Reddit

While the cemetery is generally well-maintained, the passage of time has taken its toll on some of the older markers. Visitors might notice stones that are weathered, leaning, or even fallen. Community efforts, like those organized by the Friends of Kalamazoo Historical Cemeteries, sometimes focus on preservation and cleaning workshops, aiming to protect these historical artifacts for future generations. Preserving the Past: Gravestone Care

The preservation of historic gravestones is a delicate and important task, and Mountain Home Cemetery is no exception. Many of the older markers are made of materials that are susceptible to weathering, erosion, and biological growth like moss and lichen. This can obscure inscriptions and, over time, lead to the deterioration of the stone itself. Reddit

Community involvement plays a crucial role in maintaining these historical markers. Organizations like the Friends of Kalamazoo Historical Cemeteries actively work to clean and preserve headstones. These efforts often involve gentle cleaning techniques using specialized products and tools that won't damage the stone. Workshops are sometimes held, offering the public a chance to learn proper gravestone cleaning and preservation methods, turning a visit into a hands-on historical experience. Instagram+1

For visitors interested in gravestone preservation, it's important to understand that unauthorized cleaning or repair can cause more harm than good. If you're passionate about preservation, consider reaching out to local historical societies or cemetery associations to see how you can contribute to their ongoing efforts. Reddit
