What Travellers Say

Reviews for the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital are deeply concerning, with multiple accounts from families detailing negative experiences regarding patient care, medication, and the perceived decline of loved ones during their stay. Some former patients also describe harsh conditions and abuse from decades past. While the water tower is a notable landmark, the reviews focus heavily on the human impact of the institution's operations.
"The staff seemed nice. They agree with me that my dad should not have been there.
Let me just say that a mental hospital is not an appropriate place to send people with dementia.
My dad has dementia. He was living with me and my kids for a few weeks , then he got combative. I had to call 911. He went to the local hospital where he stayed until he went to Kalamazoo.
Before he went there he could shower himself, with guidance, walk with a walker (they wouldn't let him have one), use his shaver, dress himself, feed himself , make a sandwich or bowl of cereal, use the bathroom alone, have a semblance of conversation and was farely alert, we put together puzzles together.
4 weeks later they say he can be discharged. I found a good place for him near me.
When I picked him up he was slumped over in a wheel chair. As they were bringing him to the car they told me that he'd been LOOKING down at the ground and that he was being stubborn and wouldn't sit up or pick up his feet.
I believed them. BIG MISTAKE! I thanked them for keeping my dad safe. I even gave them a hug.
I live 2 1/2 hours from Kalamazoo. On the way home I kept noticing that he wasn't being stubborn he was extremely doped up.
When we got to his new place, I told him to pick up his feet while pushing him in a wheelchair. He said that he couldn't. I asked why and he said that they were too heavy. HE WAS TOO DOPED UP! 😡🤬
It's 3 weeks I with the med that they gave him, I'm so hoping he'll come out of it next week.
I put him on hospice, not end of life. They have nurses and doctors. My dad has been on a lot of meds, some being for multiple things. The Dr at his new place took him off of 5 meds and replaced one with a different med. We're into that for a few days now.
Anyway.....
Kalamazoo broke him. He can't do anything by himself now. I'm just praying that he will wake up a bit, be a little more alert.
I'll say it again, a mental hospital is not an appropriate place for someone with dementia"

"This is what they did to my son who is special needs, nonverbal. This is after two weeks of not being able to see him. They didn't even have him checked by a doctor tried to hide it from me. I'll let you know who every one of them are."
