What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Bison Trail for its spectacular views and challenging, rewarding hike. The diverse terrain and potential for wildlife sightings are major highlights. However, the lack of shade and the need for ample water are consistently noted as significant considerations for hikers.
"This place was an amazing challenge. We made a couple of wrong turns, but we survived and kicked its ass. The views were spectacular. The place was just so different from the usual Minnesota trails. If anyone chooses to tackle this path, have water and sunscreen if it's hot and sunny. We'd go back if we are in the area. We passed another couple that either knew a shortcut or was avid hikers. We were beat by the end, but the experience was awesome. BRING WATER if it's hot."

"Another beauty of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is the Bison Trail. Nice wide open space with lots of views from bison , deer, birds and snakes, lakes , dams, gorge and mountain. Well marked terrain except the last part of the loop on French lake. Terrain have some elevation a little bit rocky on some parts. No shades. Bring minimum of 1.5 liters or 3 bottled water if hiking in summer. Don’t be fooled of the overcast weather. Wear SPF creams and hoodies for sun protection. This hike has a distance of over 6 miles with no restroom from and to the trail head. Medium hike for 50 and above of age.
I enjoyed the hike for the views. All photos were taken during the actual hike with overcast weather in July of 2023."

"Was looking for a decent hike and found this spot. I’m used to bigger mountains living in Utah but this hike was good. Not much elevation at all but very good scenery. With the elevation being only at around 500 feet total, you get a great workout with it being 6 miles, if you do the entire loop. To get to the canyon, it’s about 3.5 miles. There are a few spots with shade but the majority of it is open so in the summer, make sure you have plenty of water. Didn’t see any snakes, just a bunch of colorful lizards. Supposedly longhorns and bison roam the area but I didn’t see any on my trek. There are signs of them from their droppings. Overall, this hike was very enjoyable for the area. I would definitely recommend and will likely be going back to spots in this area. Enjoy!"
