What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Outlook Beach at Fort Monroe is praised for its clean, sandy shores and excellent ship-watching opportunities. Visitors enjoy the abundance of marine life, particularly hermit crabs, and the calm waters suitable for families. However, the lack of restrooms and occasional jellyfish stings are noted drawbacks.
"This was a very nice sandy beach that did not have a lot of little pebbles or rocks at your feet, like some other local areas. The waves were not big. This location was very crowded. We were still able to find a suitable spot. There was a lot of parking, especially in the grass area. Lots of sights to see around and on the way in/out. I would recommend this area to anyone. My kids enjoyed it. 😀 Did not see any dolphins, we did see several pelicans, sailboats and shipping containers. Youngest daughter did get stung by a jelly fish.... 😭
On Day # 2 here, we saw dolphins! We were literally swimming within 5 - 10 feet of 3 ! It was so awesome ! Pics will be from our 3 days we've went here... Love it, despite both daughters being stung with 2 days. They did they'd go back but worried it'll happen again. We know it's a chance but we love the water !"

"Reviewing because I benefited from other reviewers (thanks btw!)
We are here from out of state and wanted to bring the kids to a low-key beach. Found this one and it was a hit! Clean, quiet, not crowded, comfortable. Parking is right there. Water isn’t too deep so felt safe with kids (mine are aged 13, 10, 8). They swam, collected seashells and hermit crabs, and we went out to the sandbar. Head over to Fort Monroe for some history, too! It was a perfect day and location!"

"Super nice beach if you're interested in wildlife/fish/birding. it's not the best for people who like shell hunting because although there are plenty of beautiful unbroken shells of all sizes along the rocks they're practically all occupied by hermit crabs, which i enjoyed watching and finding otherwise. when i say there were a TON of hermit crabs i mean any rock you'd look at carefully enough you'd almost definitely be able to find some.
there's also some blue crabs swimming around and hanging out in the water closer to the rocks, and plenty of ghost crabs in their hidey holes in the sand
no bathrooms nearby so if you have kids or elderly or anyone uncomfortable with taking a tinkle in the water it's not ideal for longer stays. make sure you take care of business before coming
i think it depends on the time of year you go but there were a good amount of washed up sea debris like seaweed, sponges, and more when i went in early July. i was wearing waders, so i didn't have anything brushing up against my legs as i was in the water but i can see how it'd be uncomfortable with only a bathing suit but all the seaweed and stuff in the water are in huge bunches that are easy to avoid"
