"We recently attended a production of Matilda at the South Carolina Children’s Theatre and were very disappointed by the inclusion of content that felt completely inappropriate for a young audience. One character’s exaggerated and overly suggestive movements—including hip gyrating and other adult-style dancing—felt out of place in a family show designed for children.
We expected a playful and age-appropriate adaptation of a classic story, but instead, we were shocked by a performance that felt more like a display of adult-themed humor and behavior than a celebration of childhood imagination. It was uncomfortable to watch, and I regret not leaving mid-show. We believe theater for children should prioritize storytelling, creativity, and inclusivity without crossing into material that feels intentionally provocative.
Unfortunately, this experience has made us question whether we can trust SCCT to provide safe and age-appropriate entertainment for families in the future."

"Bought tickets in the box on the balcony. Online it states that the balcony is best suited for ages 8 and up. However, I was made to switch seats with my 10 year niece couldn't seat in seat 5. I purchased that seat specifically for her. She isn't unruly. We were just seating, talking.
Then another family sits beside us with a 2 year old on their lap and a baby in their arms. Ridiculous!"

Production Quality and Content
However, audience experiences with content can vary. While many productions are lauded for their creativity and age-appropriateness, some reviews indicate that certain shows have included elements that parents found to be overly suggestive or not entirely suitable for very young children. This highlights the importance for parents to research specific show content beforehand to ensure it aligns with their family's comfort levels.
Despite occasional feedback on content, the theatre's dedication to fostering a love for theatre in children is evident. Their efforts to bring Broadway-caliber musicals and classic stories to life aim to create memorable experiences for families.
