Spyglass Hill at @pebblebeachresorts was absolutely pure. Such a fun and challenging course. Left a lot of strokes out there but my caddie @rhaven1009 helped me hole out for birdie and drain some really long putts. Reviews Summary

Spyglass Hill Golf Course is widely praised as a challenging and beautiful test of golf, often considered superior to its more famous neighbor, Pebble Beach, by purists. Golfers appreciate the unique dual landscape, transitioning from ocean views to tree-lined fairways, and the masterful design by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Some minor inconsistencies in bunker sand depth and unexpected course changes have been noted.

"All in all, a great course and a must if you are an avid golfer. So much history here and it’s always great to tee it up where the pros play yearly. The course was in 8.5/10 shape. The greens are rolling great and the fairways and tee boxes are super pure. The starter never told us that 14 and 15 are changed and used temporary greens since there is construction happening on 15, it was fine but very unexpected.

The only thing I had an issue with is that the bunker sand depth was pretty inconsistent. Some bunkers were fluffy when others were super firm and had maybe an inch of sand in them."

"Absolutely beautiful golf course. Love the mix of links style golf with treelined holes. It's almost like two smaller golf courses combined. It's just a gorgeous challenge.

Hint... check the trees on #6 for a booze box. :)"

Matt Johnson

"Holy wow. What a dream course. Play here during sunset on a beautiful day with light wind if you have the option. This track was such a dream"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Design Philosophy of Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Spyglass Hill Golf Course is a testament to the design genius of Robert Trent Jones Sr., a legendary golf course architect. Opened in 1966, the course was conceived with a dual personality, inspired by the tales of 'Treasure Island.' Jones Sr. masterfully crafted a layout that challenges golfers with both the natural beauty of the coastal dunes and the strategic demands of a dense forest setting. His philosophy often involved creating risk-reward opportunities, forcing players to make calculated decisions on every shot. Instagram

Jones Sr. was known for his bold designs, and Spyglass Hill is no exception. He strategically placed hazards and shaped greens to test a golfer's entire game. Hole 4, famously dubbed the 'Blind Pew,' exemplifies this with its sunken green and narrow approach, a signature element that many golfers find both frustrating and exhilarating. The course's ability to present two distinct golfing experiences—links-style coastal play and challenging woodland golf—within a single 18 holes is a hallmark of his innovative approach. TikTok

Golf purists often laud Spyglass Hill as a superior test of golf compared to its more famous neighbor, Pebble Beach. This is largely due to Jones Sr.'s intricate design, which demands precision, power, and strategic thinking. The course's ability to feel like a 'hidden gem' with every hole uncovered speaks to its unique character and the thoughtful execution of its design. Instagram

Navigating Spyglass Hill: Course Strategy and Challenges

Playing Spyglass Hill Golf Course requires a thoughtful approach, as it presents a diverse set of challenges. The front nine offers a more open, links-style feel with stunning ocean views, but don't let the scenery fool you. The wind can be a significant factor, and the undulating fairways demand accurate ball striking. Players need to be mindful of the coastal elements and adjust their club selection accordingly. Instagram

The back nine transitions dramatically into a dense forest, demanding a different kind of strategy. Accuracy off the tee is paramount to avoid the trees, and approach shots require precision to find the well-guarded greens. Many holes here are designed with risk-reward elements, encouraging aggressive play for those willing to take on the challenge. Understanding the specific demands of each hole, like the 'Blind Pew' on Hole 4, is crucial for success. TikTok

Reviews suggest that while the course is challenging, it's also incredibly rewarding. Golfers often mention the need for a good putter to carry them through, especially when wedges come up short. The inconsistent bunker sand depth can also add an unexpected layer of difficulty. Ultimately, a successful round at Spyglass Hill involves adapting to its varied terrain and embracing the strategic test it offers. Instagram [^Reviews]

The Spyglass Hill Experience: Beyond the Golf

While Spyglass Hill Golf Course is primarily a golfer's paradise, the experience extends beyond the 18 holes. The resort offers a chance to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula, with breathtaking coastal scenery and a unique forest environment. Many visitors recommend taking time to explore the pro shops, which are well-stocked with apparel and souvenirs, particularly at the adjacent Pebble Beach facilities. Reddit

The course's connection to 'Treasure Island' lore adds a whimsical element to the visit, making it feel like an adventure. Golfers often share stories of memorable shots and challenging holes, contributing to the course's legendary status. The opportunity to play a course with such rich history and design pedigree is a significant draw for enthusiasts. Instagram

For those looking to enhance their visit, consider playing during sunset for a truly magical experience, as one reviewer noted it was a 'dream course' during this time. The overall atmosphere at Spyglass Hill is one of prestige and natural beauty, making it a must-visit for any serious golf aficionado. [^Reviews]
