What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the expansive sandy shores and the joy their dogs experience at Del Mar Dog Beach. The calm canal area is a hit with families and younger pups. However, the strict summer leash laws and expensive parking are recurring points of disappointment for those expecting a true off-leash experience.
"My year and a half puppy loves Del Mar dog beach! From 6am-8am parking is free, and there are a ton of sweet dogs to play with. Dogs must be on-leash during the summer but starting Labor Day, they are allowed off leash. My dog is deathly afraid of the water but the sandy area is huge, so he has plenty of room to run around and walk up and down the beach. Del Mar is beautiful and the beach is full of dogs that are having the time of their lives!"
Kikue Fiora
"I didn't take a dog but the beach was so nice, not too busy, clean, lots of dogs and owners there, lots of shells. The sand was very nice, the walk to the water is longer than it looks so be prepared for the trip! Over all beautiful!"
Katrina Thompson
"We had such a great time at the dog beach! The wide open space was perfect for our pups—they had an absolute blast running around and playing in the sand. My daughter was thrilled with all the beautiful shells she found, and the kids couldn’t get enough of the water. It was the perfect mix of fun and relaxation for the whole family.
Next time, we’re planning to check out the fair too—it sounds like the perfect addition to an already amazing day. Can’t wait to come back!"

However, it's always best practice to check the most current signage and local ordinances upon arrival. Responsible pet ownership, including cleaning up after your dog, is paramount to maintaining access to these beautiful public spaces.
Many visitors appreciate the beach's spaciousness, which allows for enjoyable walks even when leashed. The presence of dog bag dispensers further supports responsible pet ownership.

This trail is an excellent option for those who want to combine a beach experience with a scenic hike. It's a great way to see the Del Mar coastline from a different perspective and offers a peaceful escape from the busier beach areas.
Family Fun at Del Mar Dog Beach
A notable feature for families is the canal area, where ocean water funnels through, creating a calmer, more shallow section perfect for toddlers and younger children to splash in safely. This provides a secure environment for little ones to experience the water without the intensity of the open ocean waves.
Beyond the water play, the sheer joy of watching dogs frolic and play adds to the lively atmosphere. It's a place where kids can interact with friendly dogs (under supervision, of course) and enjoy the simple pleasures of a day at the beach.
