What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Malanaphy Springs State Preserve is lauded as a beautiful and peaceful hidden gem, with its waterfall being a major draw. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty and the rewarding hike, though the trail's challenging terrain and limited parking are noted drawbacks. The cold water of the falls is a unique, albeit brief, experience.
"Follow the trail for .8 miles and you will come to a waterfall. It's so beautiful."
Amethyst Harman
"Found a small dirt parking lot upon arrival which on a Sunday evening at 630, was empty. Walked the .8 mile path to the "malanaphy spring" waterfall. The path is a little challenging with rocks and trees that have fallen across but myself and children ages 6 to 13 were able to get through it without any problems. The waterfall it's self is extremely steep and slippery on the top half. We took every step thoughtfully. The bottom half is more walkable. The water is ICE COLD even in the dead heat of Aug. We couldn't keep our toes in more than a few seconds. Extremely beautiful and peaceful place, I would highly recommend it!"

"A mile walk in, you will find the Malanaphy springs waterfall. This is a rarely found trail with entrance barely visible. It has about 5 parking spots. There may be fallen trees to go around, over or under. It is a paradise! I am a solo hiker and was extra careful to avoid mishaps. Cell service is spotty. I advise not going alone if you can help it or let someone know where you went if you do not return. Going early morning is cool and peaceful with many birds singing. If you enjoy nature, this heavy wooded area with bluffs is for you! It was my favorite trail here in Decorah. Picture just a picture. In person you can smell and hear the nature💚"
