What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Morgan County Decatur Farmers Market for its great atmosphere and the quality of local goods, especially baked items and fresh produce. However, some reviews point out challenges with parking and a desire for more clarity on organic and pesticide-free options. Improvements in vendor variety and parking management are areas for potential growth.
"I love setting up at the Decatur Farmer's Market! Great Atmosphere, great staff, and have met some wonderful people!"

"My first experience was not a totally favorable one. The vendor facility and vendors are great. But 3 handicap parking spaces? I had a healthy 97 year old with a walker. Half of the parking is not lined. Traffic jams in the parking lot. Wow! A food truck took up 2 spaces on the street parking which could easily have been a couple more handicapped spaces.
I’m hearing now that the hours may change to open at 8. That’s an hour more of traffic crammed into less time the market is open. And from a vendor’s point of view - more sales in a shorter period of time to make it worthwhile. Hoping to see more improvements."

"I was very disappointed I went there yesterday. They're only a few vendors there and all their produce was perfect looking. That's all they cared about was the way their produce looked. Not if it was healthy. I asked one vendor if their produce was organic and they said basically it was not it's they're sprayed with pesticides. Basically what I'm saying is I think most of the produce is the same produce we get from the grocery stores. Maybe some of it's grown locally but they spray it with pesticides. Why would I come to the farmers market to buy genetically modified pesticide sprayed produce? That's defeating the purpose. I don't care if it is locally grown if it's sprayed and they're using seeds that are genetically modified possibly it's the same thing as buying the grocery store produce. Somebody needs to talk to these vendors. It's just weird to me. where I live they know better than to sell some produce sprayed with pesticides. I'd rather have produce that has little holes in it from bugs and know that if the bugs will eat it that it's good for us to eat too. I've been running into this problem everywhere here in this area. Where I live you can guarantee that the produce that you buy at our Farmers market is organic because they know that non GMOs, non pesticide sprayed and soil health is important"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the market is generally family-friendly, be mindful of parking challenges, especially on busy Saturdays. Bringing a stroller or carrier might be helpful, and keeping an eye on little ones is important in crowded areas. The market also sometimes hosts events with family-friendly activities, making it an even more engaging experience.
💰 Budget-Conscious Shoppers
To maximize your budget, prioritize what's in season as it's typically more abundant and less expensive. Navigating the Market: Tips from Shoppers
However, as with many popular markets, parking can be a point of contention. Reviews mention limited handicap spaces and unlined parking areas, which can lead to traffic jams. Some shoppers also express a desire for more vendors, particularly those focused on organic or pesticide-free produce, noting that some items might be similar to grocery store offerings. This suggests that while the market is growing and offers great potential, it's wise to ask vendors about their specific farming practices if that's a priority for you.
Despite these minor challenges, the overall sentiment is positive, with many appreciating the friendly people and the opportunity to support local businesses. The market also hosts special events, like the 'All Shucked Up Fest' or Tomato Festivals, which can enhance the experience with live music and family fun, though they may also increase crowd sizes.
The Produce Predicament: What to Expect
However, a recurring theme in reviews touches upon the nature of the produce. Some visitors have expressed concerns that the produce might be sprayed with pesticides and potentially genetically modified, questioning if it differs significantly from what's available in supermarkets. This has led to a preference for produce that shows signs of natural imperfections, like bug bites, as an indicator of healthier, less-processed food. It's a reminder that the definition of 'local' and 'healthy' can vary, and direct communication with vendors is key.
For those prioritizing organic or sustainably grown items, it's highly recommended to engage with the farmers directly. Ask about their methods, whether they use pesticides, and their stance on GMOs. This proactive approach will help you make informed purchasing decisions and ensure you're getting exactly what you're looking for from your farmers market experience.
