What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Oh Be Joyful Recreation Area offers stunning natural beauty and access to challenging hikes, particularly the rewarding trek to the Blue Hole. However, visitors should be prepared for rough road conditions, especially near the campground, and a rustic camping experience with limited amenities and potential privacy issues.
"My daughter (16) and her 2 friends and I did the hike to the Blue hole. It’s just under 14 miles round trip and looking back was definitely worth it.
There were definitely some times that I thought we/I might not make it. Especially the last mile since it is aggressive, but since we were that far in there was definitely no turning around.
The trail is easy to follow except for 1 part at about the 4.5 mile mark but with the Alltrail app we were warned we were off the path and made our way back with ease.
Parking was pretty full when we got there on a Wednesday at 11am but we’re still able to find a spot.
Again the hike was difficult but definitely worth it. The 1st 5/6 miles are fairly gentle.
Just be ready for the last mile since it’s 1000 feet up over 1 mile."

"Beautiful spot for wildflower lovers!
We visited Crested Butte a little early in the season for wildflowers, but it was still incredibly beautiful. The landscape is stunning, and we were able to catch glimpses of the early blooms. I can only imagine how breathtaking it must be during the peak season in late June. Definitely a must-visit for nature lovers and hikers!"

"First and last time at this campground.
At the time we arrive around 100 cows where walking on the campground and around.
So be prepared for poops, flies, and loud MOOOO whole day long.
With 10 years of camping experience, we would rate it as the worst.
I have to admit the campsite itself was great, right on the river and we were planning on having a good time there.
No privacy: people fishing from your campsite, throwing rocks, parking on your spot and all around here.
Every rule has to be broken here.
People camping in the parking lot, toilets awfully dirty. For 5 nights we were here- no camp host. Strangers were taking booked campsites, people arguing. Campsites didn’t indicate those dates and who booked them.
The road to the campground should be described separately. We were at many boondocking spots and the roads were better. In my opinion if they charge for the site, they are responsible for maintaining the road.
Also, don’t get a lot of expectations about wild flowers. This year was a dry year and many of them are already gone (mid July).
Be cautious. Many good hikes in one hour driving on rough road. Road passing Gothic is so bad and dangerous that we would not do it again.
Daisy Pass was our favorite hike, but road was rough too."

Navigating the Rough Roads
Beyond the immediate campground access, roads leading to popular trailheads like Gothic and Daisy Pass are also noted as being rough and potentially dangerous. While the allure of these destinations is strong, potential visitors should be prepared for a bumpy ride and assess their vehicle's capabilities before setting out. Using navigation apps like AllTrails can be helpful for staying on track, but they won't mitigate the physical challenges of the terrain.
Campground Realities and Expectations
Furthermore, the campground's facilities, particularly the toilets, have been described as dirty and insufficient for the number of visitors. Issues with campsite booking and management have also been noted, with instances of strangers occupying reserved spots and a lack of consistent camp host presence. While the natural beauty is undeniable, potential campers should temper their expectations regarding amenities and privacy, and be prepared for a more rugged, self-sufficient camping experience.
The Iconic Blue Hole Hike
It's crucial to be prepared for this hike. The trail is generally easy to follow, but having a navigation app like AllTrails is recommended, as one reviewer noted needing it to get back on track at one point. The first 5-6 miles are described as fairly gentle, offering a deceptive start before the ascent. Proper hiking gear, ample water, and snacks are essential for completing this demanding but incredibly rewarding journey.
