When the Busted Plug was unveiled 22 years ago — almost to the date — an Elvis impersonator performed, the theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey" played, and the tarp was removed on the "leaning hydrant of Columbia." Now the sculpture is in storage while it awaits a new home. Click the link in our bio to see where some of you would like it moved and more history of the huge hydrant. #COLAtoday 📸 ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Busted Plug Plaza a unique and amusing roadside attraction, perfect for a quick, free photo opportunity during road trips. While some note it could use a bit more upkeep and a more engaging surrounding environment, its sheer novelty and the accompanying murals are consistently praised.

"We were in the midst of a 15 hour trip. This was right about in the middle so we stopped to see it. It was about 5-10 minutes off whatever the main highway was. It’s pretty neat. Of course it isn’t super thrilling, but I don’t know what the other reviewers expected from a piece of art. It was super cool and different from anything else I had ever seen. It’s in the middle of a parking lot. Even better, it’s free and it was worth getting out of the car to stretch my legs around it. Also, across the parking lot was a pretty nifty mural."

Vicki Langer

"The World's Largest Fire Hydrant was pretty cool. Needs a little upkeep. Still cool because it's showing it's age just like a real one does. Rusty chains and all. Heard it used to be a water fountain but now it's just a sculpture.

The mural back behind it is large and sweet."

Josh Arnold

"What a cool place to visit! A fun roadside attraction in Columbia to stretch your legs on a road trip. It isn’t difficult to find as it does stand out! This destination is not far from highways. The sculpture is surrounded by parking lots for easy parking. Have a great time on your visit!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Artistry of Blue Sky

The Busted Plug Plaza is the creation of renowned artist Blue Sky, known for his large-scale public art installations. The sculpture, officially titled 'Tunnelvision' in some contexts, was unveiled in 2001 and quickly became a quirky landmark in Columbia, South Carolina. TikTokInstagram

Blue Sky's intention was to create a piece that was both monumental and whimsical, a playful challenge to other 'world's largest' attractions. The hydrant's design, intentionally crooked, adds to its unique character. The artist himself has made some colorful remarks about his creative process, adding to the mystique of the piece. Instagram

While the sculpture's current status in storage is a point of discussion among art enthusiasts and locals, its impact as a memorable roadside attraction and a testament to Blue Sky's artistic vision remains significant. TikTokInstagram

A Roadside Icon's Evolution

Reviews often highlight its convenience, noting its proximity to highways and ample parking, making it an easy detour. Visitors appreciate the free access and the chance to see something truly out of the ordinary. The adjacent murals also contribute to the site's appeal, offering a richer artistic experience than just the hydrant alone. Reddit

However, the sculpture's current situation in storage presents a challenge for those wishing to visit. This transition period means that while the memory of the 'World's Largest Fire Hydrant' persists, experiencing it in person requires checking for updates on its future location. TikTok
