What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely stunning, majestic mountain views at Cinnamon Pass and along the Alpine Loop. The challenging drive in a capable vehicle is often described as rewarding, though some found it more difficult than expected. The remote nature and lack of services are noted, emphasizing the need for thorough preparation.
"Beautiful views at Cinnamon Pass. Road up was pretty easy and had a little bit of traffic going both directions. It was about 20 degrees difference so make sure to pack a jacket if you plan to stay up there for a bit. Overall though it was worth the trip. Will definitely do it again."

"Cinnamon Pass trail has stunning views all the way up & down! The mountains are majestic in all directions. We had to travel through Cinnamon Pass to get to multiple other towns & passes & we didn't mind one bit."
Trey Marlar
"I only took a star away because I ended up driving on a road more challenging and more beautiful scenic wise. I took Rodney (My Crv) up this road from spring Creek. Just because I took him up this pass doesn't mean you can. I am sure everything I've done was off the skin of my teeth.
Leaving Silver Creek there is a sign that says (Entering remote area, EMS response may be limited. No services 'water, food and fuel. Be wildlife aware). This road will eventually bring you to a junction to go towards Animas Forms which is the safest way off the mountain.
Cinnamon Pass requires a high clearance vehicle at a minimum. This year was really bad (2023) and I somehow managed to get Rodney to the summit and he is bone stock with no modifications. I only installed one size bigger tires over the factory tires.
This was a great drive with just a few big obstacles for a vehicle like Rodney. I expect anything with 9inches of ground clearance or more with 4wd will make this pass feel like you're in a safari.
• Always remember to get fuel/food/water before getting out here.
• If you have a breakdown, you could be out there for a very long time so make sure you have survival items and at least a first aid kit. Enjoy yourself and be mindful of your approach/departure angles in certain spots."

Navigating the Alpine Loop: Vehicle & Road Conditions
When planning your trip, consider renting a Jeep from Ouray, often called the 'Jeep capital of America,' or joining a guided tour. These options provide the necessary equipment and expertise to navigate the loop safely. If you are driving your own vehicle, ensure it's in excellent condition and equipped for off-road travel. Always check recent road conditions before heading out, as weather can significantly impact the passability of the route.
Essential Preparations for Remote Mountain Travel
Temperatures at high altitudes can fluctuate dramatically, even in summer. Packing layers of clothing, including a warm jacket, is essential. The views are spectacular, but the environment is rugged. Be mindful of your approach and departure angles when navigating obstacles, and always be aware of your surroundings. Remember that camping directly alongside the road is discouraged due to continuous traffic throughout the night. Responsible travel and preparedness are key to enjoying the stunning, yet demanding, beauty of Cinnamon Pass.
Capturing the Majesty: Photography at Cinnamon Pass
When packing your gear, a wide-angle lens is invaluable for encompassing the vastness of the scenery, while a telephoto lens can be useful for isolating distant peaks or spotting wildlife. Consider bringing a sturdy tripod for sharper images, especially in challenging light conditions or if you plan to capture long exposures of any waterfalls or streams. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather; the mountain environment can shift from sunny to cloudy or rainy in a matter of minutes, so having protection for your gear is wise. Always be mindful of your footing and the rugged terrain when setting up shots. While drone photography is possible, ensure you are aware of and comply with all federal and local regulations regarding drone usage in protected areas.
