Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Big Boy 4004 as an awe-inspiring piece of engineering history, with many recommending it as a must-see stop in Cheyenne. Its impressive size and static display in a pleasant park setting are frequently highlighted as major positives.

"If you're reading this, you probably already know what the big boy is. For anyone new, this is one of the world's largest steam engines. It was used to transport large amounts of freight across the plains and deep into the Rockies.

With only a few made, this was one of the candidates to be restored as part of the Union Pacific steam program. It was not picked and has a great display in a city park. If you are in town or even passing by, stop and see one of these amazing feet of engineering before they had computers."

The Legacy of the Big Boy

The Union Pacific Big Boy locomotives are legendary, representing the pinnacle of steam engine technology. Built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in the 1940s, these 4-8-8-4 articulated steam engines were designed to haul heavy freight over the Wasatch Mountains between Ogden, Utah, and Laramie, Wyoming. With their immense size and power, they were crucial for the Union Pacific Railroad's operations during a critical period in American industrial history. Only 25 were ever built, making each surviving example a significant piece of railway heritage. Instagram

Big Boy 4004, specifically, is a testament to this legacy. While it's a static display today, its presence in Holliday Park allows countless visitors to appreciate the engineering prowess and the sheer physical presence of these giants. It serves as a tangible link to the era when steam power dominated the rails, a time before the widespread adoption of diesel and electric locomotives. Reddit+1

Many enthusiasts and casual visitors alike are struck by the locomotive's imposing dimensions. The massive drive wheels, the intricate network of pipes and valves, and the sheer length of the engine all contribute to its awe-inspiring appearance. It’s a powerful reminder of the ingenuity and hard work that built the American railway system. Reddit
