Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking scenery and rewarding nature of the Chasm Lake hike, often calling it one of the best in Colorado. The challenging terrain is acknowledged, with many recommending proper gear like spikes for icy sections. While beautiful year-round, the hike is noted as strenuous and not ideal for very young children.

"Awesome time with the family. Great scenery. Very moderate hike. There was rock climbing and even so people with skiis. I recommend spikes for your hiking shoes. The path at times is covered with ice/snow. Please pack accordingly. Not kid friendly, but worth the visit. 4.25 miles to the lake and 4.25 miles for turnaround. Elevation is high every step we take. I didn't see any dogs/pets at the lake. Be safe, everyone."

Eddie Toledo

"Such a fun hike! I went in the summer back in high school, and again on September 14, 2025 when there was a blizzard at the top😂 The hike up is really peaceful and offers BEAUTIFUL mossy forests, babbling brooks, and a cute rocky trail once you breach the treeline. The views of Twin Peaks are unbeatable, and Chasm Lake itself, with or without the snow, is such a stunning lake."

Cole Dwyer

"Hike to Chasm lake was tiring but worth it. Decent rock scrambling towards the end. Weather was kind to us and views were good too. Sharing a few pics and videos of our early August hike."

While the Chasm Lake hike is incredibly rewarding, it's generally considered too strenuous and challenging for families with young children. The significant elevation gain, steep ascents, and potential for icy conditions make it a difficult trek for little ones. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Chasm Lake Hike: A Challenging Ascent

The Chasm Lake hike is a strenuous 8-9 mile round trip journey that ascends over 2,500 feet. The trail begins in a beautiful subalpine forest, characterized by pine trees, little streams, and small waterfalls. As you gain elevation, the terrain transitions into a more rocky path, eventually leading you above the treeline into the stark, beautiful alpine tundra. Instagram+3

Towards the final approach to the lake, hikers will encounter a section of rock scrambling. While some describe it as decent, others find it challenging, especially if conditions are icy. This is where sturdy footwear and potentially microspikes become crucial. The reward for this effort is the breathtaking view of Chasm Lake nestled in a cirque beneath the imposing Longs Peak. InstagramReddit+1

Many visitors recommend starting this hike well before dawn, especially during the summer months. This allows you to witness the spectacular sunrise over Longs Peak, painting the granite face in vibrant hues of orange and pink. It also helps you avoid the intense midday sun and the afternoon thunderstorms that are common in the Rocky Mountains. TikTokInstagram+1

Chasm Lake in Winter and Shoulder Seasons

Visiting Chasm Lake outside of peak summer offers a different, yet equally stunning, experience. In the winter months, the lake can freeze over, presenting surreal deep blue ice formations. This is when microspikes or crampons are absolutely essential for safe passage, as the trail can be heavily iced and snow-covered. Instagram+1

Early October is noted by some as a time when the upper section of the trail can be quite icy, requiring careful scrambling over rocks. However, this also means fewer crowds. The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) can be unpredictable, with potential for snow and ice even when the weather seems mild. Always check current trail conditions and weather forecasts before heading out. InstagramReddit

It's important to remember that winter conditions in the Rockies can be hazardous. Always be prepared for extreme weather, carry appropriate safety gear, and be willing to turn back if conditions worsen. Avalanche awareness is also critical during winter months. Instagram

Planning Your Visit: Permits and Parking

A key aspect of planning a trip to Chasm Lake is understanding Rocky Mountain National Park's timed entry permit system. During peak seasons, you will likely need a permit to drive into the park and access popular trailheads like Longs Peak. These permits are released on a schedule and sell out quickly, so booking in advance is crucial. Instagram

Parking at the Chasm Lake trailhead (Longs Peak Ranger Station) is notoriously limited. Visitors often report arriving in the pre-dawn hours, sometimes as early as 3:00 AM, to secure a parking spot. If you miss out on parking, you may have to park further down the road and walk, adding to your day's mileage. TikTokInstagramReddit

For those who don't secure a parking spot or prefer not to drive, exploring shuttle options within Estes Park or to the RMNP entrances might be an alternative, though direct shuttles to the Longs Peak trailhead are uncommon. Always check the official RMNP website for the most up-to-date information on permits, parking, and park access. Reddit
