What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Alt Karlsbad Carlsbad Mineral Water offers convenient 24/7 self-service for mineral water, a draw for health-conscious individuals. However, recent price hikes, a persistent cash-only policy with unreliable machines, and inconsistent staff presence have led to significant customer dissatisfaction and a decline in its 'local gem' status for some.
"- Self-service is actually great; I can go at any hour.
- Cash machines ALWAYS have problems, won't accept bills & coins, or take money without giving credit. I've recommended [for years on deaf ears] the coin machines Sprouts Farmer's Market has.
- Staff "sometimes" comes into work on time, "some" are friendly & helpful.
- Prices have gone up 100% (or more) since I started buying their water.
I have not gotten massages or used any on-site services"

"I used to love coming here, we’ve been getting our water here for the last 4 years. But the reason we are no longer coming here is because their prices increased by $.40 within the last year and a half. It used to be $1/gallon, in January 2024 increased to $1.20 and then when I came to fill up water this last time it increased to $1.40. That’s a 40% increase!! The owner commented on someone else’s review saying this was the first increase ($1.20 to $1.40) in 3 years which isn’t true as I’ve been coming here for the last 4 and know for a fact the increase from $1 to $1.20 happened just in early 2024. It would be nice if accountability was taken rather than commenting to make it seem like the customers are making it up."

"Carlsbad Alkaline Water went from a local gem to a case study in how to lose loyal customers. Prices jumped from $1 to $1.40 per gallon, but they still operate cash-only in 2025—no credit card reader, no modern convenience, no transparency. Their “exclusive rights” and “magical mineral water” claims crumble under scrutiny, with no posted independent pH tests or verifiable quality audits. Add in celebrity name-drops and wellness clichés, and it feels more like marketing theater than science. Customers have options now—and many, like me, are walking away.
In the end, Carlsbad Alkaline Water isn’t selling health; it’s selling a story, and the story’s not worth $1.40 a gallon."

The Carlsbad Mineral Water Experience
However, the experience is not without its challenges. The operation is strictly cash-only, and the self-service cash machines have been frequently reported as unreliable, often malfunctioning or not dispensing credit when money is inserted. This has led to frustration for customers who don't carry much cash or need change.
Recent price increases have also become a significant talking point. What was once a budget-friendly local gem has seen its per-gallon cost rise substantially, leading some long-time customers to reconsider their loyalty. The lack of modern payment options and transparency around pricing and water quality testing are recurring themes in customer feedback.
Navigating the Cash-Only System
This cash-only policy, coupled with the unreliable machines, means that if you don't have the exact amount or if a machine is down, you might leave empty-handed. Some reviewers have expressed frustration that in the year 2025, a business still operates without modern payment conveniences like card readers or even a reliable ATM on-site.
If you're planning a visit, it's wise to treat it like a vending machine experience: have your payment ready and be prepared for potential hiccups. The lack of consistent staff presence during posted hours can also mean there's no one to assist if you encounter issues with the machines.
