Visitors rave about Limekiln State Park's stunning natural beauty, from its idyllic beach with a freshwater creek to its enchanting redwood forest and waterfall. The historic limekilns add a unique touch. Many appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to unplug due to the lack of cell service. Some note that trails can be slippery and that cash is required for entry.

"Small but cute, perfect to camp and have a day at the beach, there’s a fresh water creek running so soaking on it after all the salty water is amazing. I highly suggest to camp, their camping spots are steps away from the creek and a few more steps away from the beach, the ones in red woods are so cool, make you feel like you are in the forest"

"I went on winter and the park was empty, just three of us there. It was a unique experience, the trail to the waterfall was amazing surrounded with redwoods. The weather was warm and with plenty of sun. Saw a lot of slugs. If you want to walk to the waterfall be prepared with a rod and boots with good grip because the rocks could be very slippery. There's a picnic area, we were there just for the hike though."

Brian Trejo

"The beach is incredible and idyllic, with a crystal clear stream running into the ocean. You can hear the sound of the pebbles as the waves go in and out. Wow! So wonderful. You can stand on a huge rock as water comes whooshing around you. Bring $10 cash. They don't give change. So you must have a $10 bill! There is shady parking which is nice. You have to take off your shoes and socks to cross the creek to get to the shoreline, or else hop over rocks to cross the creek."

The most renowned is the Limekiln Falls Trail, a moderate hike that takes you deep into a redwood forest. As you ascend, you'll be surrounded by towering ancient trees, a truly awe-inspiring experience. The trail can be slippery, especially after rain, so wearing sturdy hiking boots with good grip is essential. Reddit

The reward at the end of the trail is the picturesque Limekiln Falls, cascading down moss-covered rocks. The sound of the waterfall and the lush greenery create a serene atmosphere. For those seeking a bit more adventure, there's an option to take a less-maintained path up to a ridge, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline. Instagram

The Historic Limekilns

A unique feature of Limekiln State Park is the presence of historic limekilns, dating back to the late 19th century. These structures were used to produce lime, a crucial component in cement and mortar, from local limestone. Exploring these kilns offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's industrial past and the ingenuity of early settlers.

The kilns are typically found along the trail system, often near the waterfall. Their imposing stone structures stand as a testament to a bygone era, nestled within the natural beauty of the park. It's a stark contrast to the surrounding redwoods and coastline, providing a unique historical context to your visit.

While the kilns themselves are a historical artifact, their presence adds another layer of discovery to the park. Imagine the labor involved in quarrying the stone and firing the kilns in this remote location. It's a reminder of the human history intertwined with the natural landscape of Big Sur.

Coastal Charm and Beach Access

Limekiln State Park boasts a beautiful beach that offers a different kind of natural wonder.
