What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Benham Falls for its easy accessibility and the striking contrast between lava fields and forests. While some find the 'falls' to be more of a cascade, the overall experience is praised for its peaceful atmosphere and scenic beauty, making it a great short hike for families and those seeking an inclusive nature outing.
"So lots of good reviews of the brevity and beauty of this quick 1/2 mile hike but one of the things that jumped out most to me was the duality of the topography as you strolled along the Deschutes from the trailhead to the falls.
Once you cross the wooden bridge and head north, as you walk along the river on your right (west) is the edge of the black and stark lava fields that make up the main site of the Lava Butte cinder cone, but where you are walking and everything to your left (east) is gently sloping pine and evergreen forest.
Throw in the gently meandering waters of the Deschutes and you have a little bit of everything that central Oregon’s high desert landscape has to offer on this short and scenic hike.
Whether you are parking/hiking or biking from Sunriver, definitely visit these falls!!"

"Mosquito falls - I mean Bengam falls trail... Trail is flat, follow trail downstream over the bridge (after applying bug spay) to the "falls". Falls resemble class 6 rapids. Mid at best."
Larry Holub
"Great short hike through the ponderosa tree following the river. End up high above the falls for great views. Easy hike to make and good for bikes, kids and dogs."
