"I came here in September 2022. It's an absolutely beautiful island. There's wild horses that roam around, and there are beautiful big seashells all around that you can bring back to the main land. You even have the option to camp out on the island overnight, the tour guide helps in this process, and picks the best spot for it. Highly recommend visiting Carrot Island while in North Carolina!!"

"Carrot Island…home of wild horses. Legend has it that there was a ship wreck many years ago and the horses swam to shore. These would be their offspring. They are so you used to people being on the island that you will see them mosey by here and there. Whether you take a boat over to the island or stay put across the way in Beaufort, you may get lucky enough to spot one, like we did 🐴"

"I took the ferry over to carrot Island in hopes of seeing some wild horses. Unfortunately, I did not. But, I loved learning some history of the island, and being left alone to wonder as I wish. I waded over to bird shoals from there. Sand spurs and cacti are everywhere! Wear good shoes and pants. Bring tweezers, too. It feels very dessert like. Sunblock and water are musts."

The Wild Horses of Carrot Island
When visiting, patience is key. The horses may not always be immediately visible, as they graze and move throughout the island. Early mornings and late afternoons are often prime times for sightings, as the horses tend to be more active during these cooler parts of the day. Many visitors find that using a camera with a good zoom lens allows for incredible photographic opportunities without encroaching on the horses' space. Observing their interactions and natural behaviors is a truly special experience that connects you with the untamed beauty of the coast.
Navigating Carrot Island's Terrain
Beyond the muddy sections, the outer loop and other areas of the island present a more desert-like environment. Here, you'll encounter sand spurs and cacti, making sturdy, closed-toe footwear absolutely essential. Many reviewers strongly advise wearing good shoes and long pants to protect against these prickly plants. Bringing tweezers is also a practical tip, as sand spurs can easily embed themselves in clothing or skin. The combination of sand, mud, and vegetation means that visitors should be prepared for an adventurous walk rather than a paved path. Sunscreen and ample water are also non-negotiable due to the exposed nature of the island and the potential for intense coastal sun.
