What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bird Shoal is lauded for its secluded, private island feel and abundant natural beauty, particularly its shell-laden shores and diverse birdlife. Visitors appreciate the opportunity to explore miles of coastline and potentially see wild horses. However, the complete lack of facilities, including restrooms and shade, requires thorough preparation.
"Bird Shoal was great to explore. We went in October & very few other people were on the island at the same time. The island is uninhabited & there are no restrooms. There also isn’t any shade. This is good to know upfront. A large group of Black Skimmers greeted us where we disembarked on the beach. There were too many beautiful shells tempting us while we walked around to see what we could find. Bird Shoal is a narrow island/sand bar that extends across most of the south side of the Rachel Carson Reserve.
I’m including some pics of the birds, vegetation, & and mucus nets cast by parchment tube worms (they use these to catch food)"

"Very secluded beach. I heard this is an unofficial nude beach if you are discreet."

"This was a highlight of our trip Down East! We took a ferry out to the island and spent hours collecting seashells, admiring wild horses and birds, and playing along the shore. This was my first time seeing living sand dollars. (Don't take green or brown sand dollars.) With three miles of coastline and very few people, this felt like our own private island. Keep in mind there are no restrooms, shade, or access to food or drinking water, so bring whatever you may need."
