Hey Door County Dems, loved seeing you guys in the parade in Bailey's Harbor, WI! This group got the loudest and biggest applause out of everyone. It gave me hope, especially when I woke up with such a pit in my stomach today. I love this country, I'm just so saddened by everything that's happening. #doorcountydemocrats #4thofjuly #ruralvoter #bluevoter

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise The Ridges Sanctuary for its serene atmosphere, well-maintained boardwalks, and unique ridge and swale ecosystem. The historic lighthouses and abundant nature, including birds and fungi, are highlights. The $5 honor system admission is seen as excellent value, though some visitors have noted the visitor center being closed unexpectedly.

"The Ridges actually is three properties – I was fortunate enough to have the time to hike all of the Logan Creek property, and then went onto the actual sanctuary down the road and hike to the longest loop trail.
In both cases, I saw a total of only seven people between the two properties. For me, that was delightful.
The trails are absolutely lovely with, for the most part, wide mulched paths. For the paths that are deeper in the wooded areas, they are well worn and clearly marked with tape.
There's so much to take in as far as the flowers and fungi and the sheer beauty of it all. Both parks are extremely well-maintained – I saw no trash at all.
Five dollars is an incredible value for admission – and it is an honor system."

Tania Womack

"Peaceful and educational day/walk. A very nice lady told us about the lighthouse keepers home. They used newspaper to insulate back then. Highly recommend to all!."

Lori Ditter

"This is a nature walk area in Bailey's Harbour, with boardwalks all the way throughout the trail. The end of the boardwalk leads you up to the two lighthouses at either ends. The larger lighthouse has a small museum, with living areas showing how a lighthouse keeper would have lived there. There's a fee to check out the trail, and visit to the lighthouse museum is included in it."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Ridge and Swale Ecosystem

The Ridges Sanctuary is renowned for its ridge and swale topography, a rare and biologically diverse ecosystem found along the Great Lakes. This unique landscape was formed over thousands of years by ancient shorelines of Lake Michigan. As the lake levels receded, successive beach ridges were left behind, interspersed with wetlands or swales. This creates a mosaic of microhabitats, supporting a remarkable array of plant and animal life, including several rare and endangered species. InstagramReddit

Walking through The Ridges means traversing these distinct ridges and swales, often via elevated boardwalks. This allows visitors to experience the subtle but significant environmental differences between these zones without disturbing the fragile ground. The diversity of plant communities, from dry, sandy ridges to moist, shaded swales, contributes to the sanctuary's ecological richness. Researchers are actively studying how changes in Great Lakes water levels impact this delicate system. Instagram+1

This natural phenomenon makes The Ridges Sanctuary a crucial area for conservation and a fascinating place for nature enthusiasts to explore. It's not just a walk in the woods; it's an immersion into a geologically and biologically significant landscape. Instagram+1

Exploring the Historic Lighthouses

A significant draw at The Ridges Sanctuary are its two historic lighthouses, the Baileys Harbor Range Lights. These lights, dating back to the late 19th century, were crucial for guiding ships through the often treacherous waters of Lake Michigan. They are a testament to Door County's maritime history and offer a glimpse into the lives of lighthouse keepers. Reddit

Visitors can access the lighthouses via the sanctuary's boardwalk trails. The larger lighthouse often houses a small museum, providing insights into the daily routines and living conditions of the keepers who maintained these vital beacons. Exploring these structures offers a tangible connection to the past and the area's seafaring heritage. InstagramReddit

The presence of these historic structures within the natural beauty of the sanctuary creates a unique juxtaposition, making for a memorable visit. They serve as a reminder of the human element intertwined with the natural landscape of Door County. Instagram

Conservation and Community Involvement

The Ridges Sanctuary is not just a place to visit; it's a living example of dedicated conservation. As Wisconsin's first land trust, established in 1937, it has a long-standing commitment to protecting its unique ecosystem. Instagram+1 This mission continues today, with ongoing efforts to safeguard groundwater and acquire critical parcels of land to expand protected areas. Instagram

Community involvement is key to their success. The sanctuary actively engages the public through educational programs like the Ridges Forest School and events such as 'Swales & Ales,' which combines nature exploration with local flavors. Instagram+1 These initiatives not only raise awareness but also foster a sense of stewardship among visitors and residents alike, ensuring the long-term preservation of this natural treasure. Instagram

Your support, whether through admission fees or participation in events, directly contributes to the vital conservation work at The Ridges. It's a place where nature's beauty is preserved for future generations, thanks to the dedication of its founders and the ongoing support of the community. Instagram
