Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Meon Valley Trail for its peaceful, flat, and easy-to-navigate path, making it ideal for walking, running, and cycling. It's a great spot for dog owners and families, with opportunities to detour to charming villages for refreshments. Some find the woodland scenery a bit repetitive, limiting broader countryside views.
"This is a 10 mile very flat walk or cycle ride along the old train line. At both ends - West Meon and Wickham - there are clear signs about the path.
It’s a little repetitive and you do not get to see a lot of the beautiful countryside along the pathway because of the woodland either side. Very sheltered at parts and benches near the West Meon end.
You can leave the path at multiple points to stop at pubs/cafes along the way.
I would recommend The White Lion Inn about half way along. Great food and drink options, with lovely staff."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the trail itself is quite linear, you can break up the journey by planning stops in nearby villages like Wickham. Here, you can find pubs and cafes for snacks and meals. Remember to pack plenty of water and snacks, as facilities directly on the trail are minimal. The peaceful atmosphere means you can let children roam a little more freely, within safe boundaries, of course.
🐶 Dog Owners
There are also areas where dogs can swim and paddle, which is a great bonus on warmer days. Remember to keep your dog under control, especially if you encounter other walkers, cyclists, or wildlife. The woodland sections offer shade, making it comfortable for dogs even when the sun is out.
🚴♀️ Cyclists
Cyclists can enjoy the peace and quiet, with the added benefit of shaded sections through the trees. While it's not a mountain biking trail, it's perfect for leisurely rides, training, or simply enjoying the scenery at a comfortable pace. Plan your route and consider stopping in Wickham for refreshments, as facilities directly on the trail are scarce.

The History of the Meon Valley Railway
Sadly, like many rural lines, the Meon Valley Railway fell victim to the Beeching cuts in the 1960s. The passenger service was withdrawn in 1955, and the entire line was closed to freight in 1968. The tracks were lifted, and the land lay disused for many years. Fortunately, a significant portion of the route was preserved and transformed into the Meon Valley Trail, offering a green corridor for recreation and a tangible link to the area's industrial past.
Today, the trail allows visitors to experience the gentle gradients and straight alignments that were characteristic of the railway's construction. You can still spot remnants of the railway's heritage, such as old bridge abutments and occasional signage, providing a subtle nod to its former life. It's a peaceful journey that allows you to appreciate the landscape while imagining the steam trains that once chugged along this very path.
Cycling the Meon Valley Trail
Cyclists often appreciate the sheltered sections provided by the mature trees lining the path, offering a pleasant ride even on sunnier days. However, it's worth noting that this same woodland cover means you won't always have expansive, panoramic views of the wider countryside. Despite this, the tranquility and the smooth ride are major draws. Remember to bring a basic repair kit, as facilities are limited along the trail itself, though you can detour into villages for refreshments.
When planning your cycle, consider starting from either Wickham or West Meon. Wickham offers more amenities, including pubs and cafes, which are perfect for a post-ride refuel. The trail is well-signposted, making navigation straightforward. It's a fantastic way to cover more ground and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the Meon Valley.
