Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking, panoramic views from Thorncombe Beacon, calling the hike rewarding despite its steepness. The historic significance and stunning coastal scenery are major highlights. Some find the walk challenging but worth every step for the vistas over the Jurassic Coast.

"Historic beacon on top of the cliffs between Golden Cap and West Bay, with excellent views over the Bridport and beyond to Chesil Beach. It would originally have formed part of a number of beacons that provided an early warning against invasion.
The walk uphill from Seatown Beach is steep, but rewarded with superb views. Seatown itself has charged parking, and the Anchor Inn and a village shop where you can stop for refreshments or supplies. National Trust members can find free parking at Langdon Hill, from which the beacon is a longer but very scenic walk away."

Andrew Thomas

"What a spectacular area to walk in, with the most amazing surrounds of cliff tops and see and fields.of.flowers. Parking is available opposite The Anchor Inn. It costs £8. However, you get a £2 deduction if you buy food at the Anchor Inn. Well worth it for a bite and a beer after viewing The Cap and Thorncombe beacon. The latter is the easier of the 2 walks. Mostly grass, I walked bare foot. It was lush and soft. Quite steep, but plenty places to.stop.and admire the beach, sea, cliffs and fields."

Linda Boshoff French

"We walked past here doing part of the south coastal path (west bay to golden cap) cloudy day but still lovely to see the views and have hike up. Not a bad hill to walk up, we didn't find it difficult at all. Can get blowy on the top and no shelter from the rain if it comes in."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Thorncombe Beacon

Thorncombe Beacon, standing proudly on the Dorset coast, is more than just a scenic viewpoint; it's a historical sentinel. Originally, it was part of a network of beacons used to signal warnings across the land, likely against invasion. These beacons, often fires lit on high points, provided an early warning system, allowing communities to prepare for threats. The strategic location of Thorncombe Beacon, overlooking the sea and surrounding countryside, made it an ideal spot for such a crucial role.

While the original beacon structure may no longer stand, the name and the elevated position serve as a reminder of its past significance. Today, visitors can stand on this historic ground and imagine the watchmen of old, scanning the horizon. The enduring presence of the beacon, even in name, connects the modern visitor to centuries of coastal history and defense. It’s a place where the dramatic landscape meets a tangible link to England's past.

The area around Thorncombe Beacon is also part of the famed Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This geological significance adds another layer to its appeal, with the cliffs themselves telling a story of millions of years of Earth's history. The combination of historical importance and natural wonder makes Thorncombe Beacon a compelling destination for those interested in both human history and the planet's ancient past. Instagram

Hiking and Walking Routes

Thorncombe Beacon is a popular destination for hikers, offering several rewarding routes along the South West Coast Path. The most direct ascent is from Seatown Beach, a charming cove at the base of the cliffs. This path is known for being steep, primarily a grassy climb, but it's manageable for most walkers and offers continuous, stunning views as you ascend. The effort is well worth the panoramic reward at the summit. InstagramReddit

For those seeking a longer, more leisurely experience, parking at the National Trust site at Langdon Hill provides a scenic alternative. This route allows for a more extended exploration of the surrounding countryside and coastline before reaching the beacon. Many visitors also incorporate Thorncombe Beacon into longer coastal walks, such as the popular stretch between West Bay and Golden Cap, or as part of a 'Three Peaks Challenge' that includes Colmers Hill and Golden Cap. Instagram+1

Regardless of the chosen route, hikers should be prepared for the exposed nature of the terrain. The summit can be very windy, even on otherwise pleasant days, so wearing layers and sturdy footwear is highly recommended. The paths are generally well-trodden, but the grassy sections can become slippery after rain. The opportunity to walk barefoot on the lush grass is mentioned by some as a unique, grounding experience. InstagramReddit

Photography Opportunities

Thorncombe Beacon is a photographer's dream, offering a wealth of dramatic and beautiful scenes. The primary draw is the expansive, 360-degree panoramic view from the summit. This vantage point provides sweeping vistas of the Jurassic Coast, including the iconic Golden Cap, the rolling hills of Dorset, and the distant Chesil Beach. The interplay of light and shadow on the cliffs and sea can create truly spectacular images. Instagram+1

For the best photographic results, timing is key. Early mornings and late afternoons, particularly during the 'golden hour,' offer soft, warm light that enhances the coastal landscape. Sunny days provide clarity and vibrant colors, while even overcast or windy conditions can lend a dramatic, moody atmosphere to your shots. The rugged coastline, with its distinct cliff formations and the crashing waves below, offers endless opportunities for capturing the raw power of nature. Instagram+1

Beyond the grand vistas, don't overlook the details. The textures of the grassy slopes, the patterns of the pebbles on Seatown Beach, and the seabirds soaring overhead can all make for compelling photographs. Drone videography has also captured stunning aerial perspectives of the beacon and the coastline, showcasing the scale and beauty of the area from a unique angle. Instagram
