On occasions, we can hear the waves from the studio, when the wind reminds us of the sea all around our little island. It’s a short drive to Fortuneswell and Chesil Beach where sea and pebbles dance together everyday and where all our senses get a great big blast of fresh air and inspiration comes from each little drop of sea spray. #lovewhereyoulive #dorset #chesilbeach

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the dramatic, wild beauty of Chesil Beach and its unique shingle landscape, often comparing it to international destinations. The nearby harbour towns like West Bay offer charming amenities and delicious seafood. However, the shingle can be challenging for walking, and swimming is not recommended due to strong currents.

"Lovely little seaside town, massive carpark before you enter the town, not only for cars but campers, day vans etc plus sea front parking available... Plenty of boats in the harbour, some trawlers from fishing trade... Lots of benches and seating all around the harbour, sea front, to enjoy fish and chips, donuts from the numerous take away places.. Restaurants, bars, pubs and gift shops can be found dotted about... Shingle beach spreads out on each side of the harbour... Crab Fishing is a must, it seems in this town, old and young enjoying the pass time... Not too busy while we were there mid week.. motorcycles were packed onto the town center, seems a great meeting point for bikers in this area... One thing watch out for the chip thief's with wings..🤣.."

"Looks as though it would be lovely on a good day, but we arrived to torrential rain most places were closed, but what we could see were alot of food options to choose from when they were open"

"Brilliant place. Beautiful little area.

Lots of places to eat and the scenery is beautiful.

Fount the ‘Platform Resturant’ and what a unique little Resturant placed within an old train station and train carriages."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geological Marvel of Chesil Beach

Chesil Beach is not just any beach; it's a geological marvel and a vital part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. This 18-mile-long shingle spit is one of the world's finest examples of a submerged shingle beach, formed by currents moving pebbles from the west. Its unique formation creates a natural barrier, protecting the low-lying land behind it, including the Fleet Lagoon, a crucial habitat for wildlife. Instagram+1

The sheer scale of Chesil Beach is impressive, stretching from near Portland to West Bay. The pebbles themselves are a testament to the power of the sea, smoothed and rounded over millennia. Walking on the beach feels like traversing a vast, textured landscape, with the constant sound of waves crashing against the shingle. It's a place that truly immerses you in the raw power of nature. Instagram

This dramatic landscape has inspired artists and writers, most famously Ian McEwan's novel 'On Chesil Beach', which uses the setting to explore themes of connection and isolation. The beach's wild beauty and unique character make it a compelling destination for anyone interested in natural history, geology, or simply breathtaking coastal scenery. TikTok

Exploring the Coastal Charm of West Bay

West Bay, located at the western end of Chesil Beach, is a picturesque harbour town that offers a different, yet complementary, experience to the vast shingle expanse. Famous for its dramatic sandstone cliffs, it gained significant recognition as a primary filming location for the popular ITV drama 'Broadchurch'. The distinctive cliffs and bustling harbour provide a charming backdrop for visitors. TikTok

The harbour itself is a hub of activity, with fishing boats adding to the maritime atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a variety of amenities, including numerous takeaway spots for classic fish and chips, restaurants, pubs, and gift shops. Crab fishing is a popular pastime here, enjoyed by people of all ages. The shingle beach here, while part of the larger Chesil system, offers a more accessible feel with amenities close by. Reddit

West Bay is also a great starting point for exploring the coastal path. Walks up the East Cliff offer stunning views back towards the harbour and along the coastline. It's a place where natural beauty meets a touch of cinematic fame, making it a must-visit for many exploring the Dorset coast. Reddit

Wildlife and Conservation at the Fleet Lagoon

Behind Chesil Beach lies the Fleet Lagoon, a large, shallow, brackish lagoon that is a haven for wildlife. This unique environment is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar site, highlighting its international importance for conservation. The lagoon's ecosystem is delicate, supporting a diverse range of bird species, fish, and invertebrates. Instagram

Birdwatchers will find the Fleet Lagoon particularly rewarding, with numerous species of waders, wildfowl, and seabirds frequenting its waters and mudflats throughout the year. It's a vital feeding and roosting ground, especially during migration periods. The shallow waters and reed beds provide essential breeding and nursery grounds for many species. Instagram

Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this fragile habitat. Visitors are encouraged to observe wildlife from a distance and to be mindful of the environment. Beach cleans, like the one mentioned in an Instagram reel, also highlight the community's commitment to preserving the natural beauty and ecological health of the Chesil Beach and Fleet Lagoon area.
